Split Pea Mash (Not As Bad As It Sounds)

What you need:

1 cup yellow split peas (uncooked)
3 cups (+?) water
1/4 cup buckwheat (uncooked)
1/2 medium onion, chopped
1/3 cup teriyaki sauce
salt to taste
dried cilantro, to taste
garlic, to taste
dried tarragon, to taste
vegetable oil for sautéing

What you do:

Heat split peas and water in a medium saucepan to boiling. Cover and simmer until peas are almost soft enough to eat (about an hour for me; not all the water should be gone). Add the buckwheat and continue to simmer for about 30-40 minutes, until buckwheat is cooked, and stir occasionally. At this point the peas will turn into mush and thicken up. Sauté the onion in the vegetable oil and add to the split pea mixture. Add the teriyaki, spices, and salt.
This should make a thick paste like mashed potatoes (except this is sweet). It would probably go well in knishes or dumplings, but I just had it by itself.
Enjoy!
