Sesame Tofu

What you need:

2 packets firm tofu
5 tablespoons soy sauce
1-2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon rice wine or mirin...or 1 tablespoon water
1 tablespoon grated root ginger
2 gloves garlic, finely chopped
50g (2oz) plain flour
40g (1 1/2oz) sesame seeds or more to taste
2 tablespoons sunflower or veggie oil

What you do:

1) Drain your tofu and cut it into nice n' rough cubes.
2) Mix soy sauce, sugar, rice wine, ginger and garlic together in a big bowl. To make it less sweet, use less sugar.
3) Marinate tofu in mixture for about 30 minutes, turning the pieces every once in a while.
4) Mix together flour and sesame seeds. Coat each piece of tofu.
5) Heat oil in fry pan and fry tofu until crisp and brown. Batches work best.
Enjoy!!
If you don't like your tofu too sweet (like me), lay off on the sugar and/or ginger and experiment with some more savory spices.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

i'm sorry you found it too salty; kinda sucks. I wonder if you could sub balsmaic vinegar for the soy sauce and use a lower sodium soy sauce? Or if you don't mind things a bit sweet, try maybe adding a bit of apple juice. It might make things a bit juicer too.

My boyfriend and I like to dip these in plum sauce...hhmmm maybe even throw some plim sauce in the marinade; could be fun.

This was pretty good. The marinade was good, I used reduced sodium, tamari soy sauce, and I added 1/4 cup veggie stock. I used a little more sugar, ginger and garlic to make up for the extra volume. I also let it sit for a half hour on each side, and turned everything again for five minutes before I floured them.

My only issue is that I couldn't really get the tofu very crispy at all. There is definitely a bit of a crunch from the sesame seeds(I used pre-toasted), but all the flour really did was adhere the seeds to the tofu. Ah well, it was very tasty anyway.

I served it on some rice and broccoli which I poured a little of the marinade over.

I too found this pretty spicy. Maybe next time less soy and more sugar, for me. Also, I found to avoid the dryness that someone reported, I mixed the leftover marinade in with some noodles - stopped my nice crisp tofu going soggy but gave the dish some moisture.

I actually used balsamic vinegar instead of the ginger because I didn't have any handy and it came out really good. So I say go for it

This was good, but VERY Salty and dry :P.  It seems to need a sauce of some sort.  Any suggestions?

This recipe was very good. I served my tofu over white rice and vegetable. I would definitely cook this again!
