I Can't Believe It's Vegan Gravy!

What you need:

1 vegetable bullion cube
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
few good dashes garlic powder
2 heaped tablespoons nutritional yeast
few good dashes soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon mustard
1/4-1/2 cup flour, as needed (I use brown rice flour)
1 tablespoon vegan butter
sea salt and pepper, to taste

What you do:

1. Combine all ingredients in pot, and bring to boil.
2. Cook on medium low heat until done.
I sometimes like to add a little pinch of sage as well. This goes great over everything! My Dad (avid meat eater) says that this gravy is delicious!

I made this with a teaspoon of 'chick'n flavor" broth in place of bullion and used it in the "Chickpea a la King" recipe on this site in place of the gravy listed for that recipe. It was great and I will definitely make this again!

This was ok.  It was kinda floury tasting and not making a proper roux left it lumpy.  I liked the mustard tinge, though.

I ended up bloging this gravy on www.peacefultable.blogspot.com and then even used it in my sheperdess pie on same site.  Thanks for a great recipe!

;)b

I followed the recipe, using 1/4 c wheat flour and about 2 1/4 c veggie broth. I added all of the other ingredients called for, as well as 1/4 tsp of sage.

It reminded me of the turkey gravy I used to eat way back when. I'll make it again. :)

This is a good, easy, quick recipe.  Mix the flour with a bit of the water and stir with a fork until you have a smooth slurry.  Once the other ingredients are hot and just beginning to simmer, stream in the slurry while you stir, and then stir until the gravy is thickened.  Also, a package of washed, sliced button mushrooms are very good in this gravy.

Really good gravy!

To those having trouble with the flour. Do not add the flour in at first, place it in a cup then mix in rapidly just enough water to make it nice and smooth. Then once the gravy base is boiling slowly pour in as you are stirring quickly. It will begin to thicken and will not be lumpy. Do not stop stirring, if you do it will begin to stick to the bottom of the pan. I have been making gravy for many years for my family after learning from my mom as a kid. This is the classic southern way to add flour, just make sure it is very smooth before you start pouring into the boiling base.

Thanks for the recipe!

I've never really had gravy before but this is pretty tasty. I'll make it again when I need gravy again. Thanks!
