Corn Crusted Mock Shrimp

What you need:

1 cup water (or original almond or soy milk)
1/2 cup cornflour
1 tablespoon EnerG Egg Replacer
2 teaspoons Spanish paprika
1 teaspoon chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon seasoning salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
oil, for deep frying
8 pieces of imitation shrimp (I got mine from vegecyber.com)

What you do:

1. Except for the oil and mock shrimp, mix all ingredients in a bowl to produce a thick batter.
2. Heat oil.
3. Dip mock shrimp into batter and fry in oil until golden brown, a little less than three minutes on each side.
4. Drain on rack or paper towel. Serve hot.
Source of recipe: Made this to eat at an omni fish fry. The intent was to share, but I'll admit after tasting myself I horded these a bit.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Hello, I had some questions if you don't mind about ordering from vegecyber.com. I want to order from them but I am really concerned about having frozen items shipped to me (I live in the south). I know they say that you can refreeze the items but from what I have always read and heard that is a huge no no in food safety. I am just scared I will get my order and the food will be not safe to eat. It is kind of expensive (not the actual food prices but the shipping costs) and I would hate to waste money on something that we can not eat. I mainly worry about the safety issue because this will be also be eaten by my toddler.

Also have you tried the fake tuna fish from them and what do you think about it? This is the main thing I want to order (truthfully some of the stuff looks scary lol) from them. I have been doing the chickpea thing but I would love to have something more authentic tasting.

Thank you so much.

The vegan stuff has vegan in the title, the vege stuff is not vegan. The BBQ ribs are vegetarian. The nutritional info for the vegan products is more in-depth.

Looks great... is corn flour absolutely necessary or can you substitute another?

You can use regular flour or corn meal, I just found that the corn flour gives it a very unique taste, as for the amount of shrimp you get in the pack, yes I do believe it is much more than eight. When mine arrived I separated it into serving sizes (my sizes not what's listed on the pack). Another great site is vegieworld.com. They require a minimum purchase of fifty bucks though, and their shipping is more than I like to pay, so I only use them for bulk purchases, still they have some products that vegeworld does not carry. People on the net rave about their spare ribs and drumsticks. If you check out my Gyro salad recipe there is a direct link to their vegan products in my last reply post.

Hey great recipe... But I had a look at vegecyber's spare ribs and the ingredients are really suss.... They have "vegetarian meat, vegetarian seasoning, pure milk".  Definetly not vegan, and I'm wondering what exactly is in this vege meat...wheat or soy etc?  Not very good nutritional info!
I was so interested in their stuff too :(

@Adaventport

At the time I last purchased my vegan seafood vegecyber was the cheapest, however depending on where you live (if you live in an area hospitable to vegans like New York, California, etc.) you may be able to find some imitation shrimp/prawn at your local Asian grocer. It will be in the freezer section. If you are in NYC look up May Wah (a vegetarian store that has a pretty decent amount of vegan products), or check the local Foodtowns (as a couple carry May Wah products).

This recipe sounds wonderful! Is there anywhere you can buy the mock shrimp at cheaper then vegecyber?

Also thanks for that website... they have pretty good prices too!  Does that package of shrimp come with more than 8?  Have you tried anything else from them?

Sorry I missed that last question. I have tried their lobster sticks and mock crab (another of my recipes features this product) as well as the tuna and fish ham... prior to becoming vegan I was a seafood junky. I actually plan to order from them again real soon, and will do my best to remember to try more than just mock fish and such.
