Butter-Like Popcorn Using Water and Salt
1 brown paper bag (or air popper)
popcorn (however much you want)
salt
water
Pop your popcorn. I don't have an air popper so I put about 5 tablespoons of kernels in a paper bag.... seal the top after pressing the air out and pop on high for about 5-6 minutes. It doesn't pop all of the kernels, but it works well enough.
Once your popcorn is popped, sprinkle it alternately with water and salt. I do this in the paper bag while shaking it. You want random pieces of popcorn to get small wet spots. Now enjoy!
I know this sounds weird, but as I was trying to figure out a way to get the salt to stick without butter or substitutes I realized that with a little salt popcorn already has a really buttery flavor to it. The water brings out the flavor and a few little moist spots gives it the texture. Give it a try!
SO HOW'D IT GO?
i do popcorn on the stove (thats the way my mum did it too!) with a bit of olive oil and i sprinkle salt, pepper, a little cayanne, and this "no salt added" seasoning right in with the kernels. spicy and yum...plus the spices get on all the popcorn and stick well.
good alternative to "butter" i used nutritional yeast but i needed to use way less water
there is always next time
Nutritional yeast is excellent on popcorn too!
Soy sauce sounds like it could be good. I don't use the stove method because I am trying to keep the popcorn healthy with no oil, no butter. I don't have a problem with salt though!
I like putting soy sauce on popcorn. i know that sounds weird but it's sooo tasty!
also, you can make popcorn on the stove. cover the bottom of a large pot with oil, put one or two kernals in and wait for them to pop( with lid on), when they do carefully pour in enough kernals to cover the bottom of the pot , put the lid back on and shake thr pot back and forth until kernals stop popping ( the shaking stops the kernals from burning on the bottom of the pan) this is how my hippie mom always popcorn because she refused to buy a microwave.
