Buffalo Style Tofu

What you need:

1 pound extra firm tofu, cut into strips 1/4" thick
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1/4 cup nonhydrogenated vegan margarine
1/2 cup hot sauce

What you do:

1. Sprinkle tofu with garlic powder. Spray a thin film of cooking spray on a frying pan.
2. Fry the tofu on high heat, flipping occasionally. It's done when the outside is slightly brown, or there are dark spots on it.
3. Melt the margarine in the microwave, add the hot sauce and stir. When the tofu is done place it in the sauce. Make sure the tofu is covered. If you like it hotter or milder just change the ration of hot sauce to margarine.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This was pretty tasty. Before I fried the tofu, I squeezed most of the water out of it. This made it nice and chewy when fried - very tasty. I also spread a little margarine over the pan instead of using cooking spray. It's a good recipe. thanks!

Ok before I went veg I had a weakness for buffalo wings. Being from close to buffalo I got anchor bar wings sauce from my local wegmans store. took some flour, pepper, garlic powder. dipped the tofu in egg  replacer then in the spicy flour mix then fried in about 1 tablespoon of oil. When done tossed them with the anchor bar sauce very very good! only thing missing was the blue cheese!

I can't thank you guys enough for the suggestions of using Franks Hot Sauce. I had never tried it before, but after tonight I know I will never be without it in my kitchen.  We made the Buffalo Tofu tonight (using the "coat with breadcrumbs, fry, then bake" method) and made sandwiches out of it...AWESOME!  It was so great, and I felt like I was having such a treat.  And I think I am just addicted to that sauce. This one is definitely a home run!

Although I haven't tried this with tempeh or seitan, I bet it would rock!  I've tried it with Quorn (warning: Quorn is not vegan, as it contains egg albumen) and it is utterly amazing.  I didn't fry the Quorn, just tossed it in the oven with the sauce until it was sizzly and starting to get chewy on the edges.  I've done this with fried tofu, as the recipe recommends, and it was great!  I don't generally add garlic or garlic powder-- as I know it's not authentic-- but it sounds soooo tasty that way.

Don't forget the celery!  A salad with a ranch-style dressing, chopped celery, and a little mound of this tofu to top it all off is a real treat (and hey, at least you're getting salad greens and celery with it).

I made this with both seitan and tofu, and they were both delicious.  I used to love boneless buffalo wings before I was vegan, and the seitan version tastes pretty much exactly like the real thing.  I used the sauce recipe on the back of the Frank's Red Hot Sauce bottle instead of this one, though, which is basically 1/2 cup Frank's and 1/3 cup melted earth balance.

This is 1000000000000 times better than buffalo wings
and cruelty free
i use 2 and a half fresh garlics though instead of garlic powder

Awesome!  I had to stop myself after about I ate about half.  I've got the rest of the sauce and tofu in the fridge for a buffalo tofu salad tomorrow, I can't wait!

Perfect for an unhealthy Saturday lunch. The tofu is frozen, thawed, and the water pressed out of it. I made this with Red Hot and I baked it and then fried it in the extra sauce. I like it spicy so I poured more hot sauce over it to top it off.
