firm or extra firm tofu (1 lb)
1 sweet onion
1-3 cloves of garlic
oil for frying
about 1/4 to 2/3 cup of brown sugar
Ok, I don't use measuring cups, so these are mostly guesstimations, but its all to taste anyways!
Take the tofu, and slice it up in about 1/2 cubes (more or less).
Stick in in a frying pan with oil! Enough oil to do a regular tofu fryin!
(*optional-add a pinch of salt here)
Let is cook for a few minutes- once it STARTS to turn golden, you need to add everything else.
Chop the onion (I prefer Walla Walla Sweet Onions-sweet onions are the best!) and add 1/4 to the whole onion (again, chopped pretty well) into the pan. This is to taste.
Then, chop the garlic cloves (not too fine) and toss them in.
Finally, add the brown vegan sugar. (sprinkle it over and mix it all in). Let all of this cook for a few more minutes (I'd say like 5-10) until the outsides of the tofu are crispy.
Then, once all the tofu is a nice dark golden brown (not burnt, mind you), get them out and onto a paper towel. Let them drain for a minute, and scoop out all the goodies (onions and garlic).
EAT!
The result? Sweet tofu that makes your breath REAK! The onions and garlic get a little carmelized and you can eat them as well, they make a great topper for this!
