Mother’s Day is this Sunday and what better way to celebrate everything she’s done for you (like cut gum out of your hair or find the mate to your sock!) than a mimosa-filled brunch with mom. And though some think of the decadent meal that comes between breakfast and lunch as an egg-centric one––and some may have even heard that the month of May is National Egg Month––we’ve decided to declare this month, as well as Mother’s Day brunch, an egg-free one.
While many of you have brunched on decks, patios, and terraces before, do you know the origins of this quirky meal? According to Smithsonian Magazine [1], the word “brunch” made its editorial debut in 1895 (way before New Yorkers laid claim to it)! The term appeared in print in a Hunter’s Weekly article calling for lighter fare. Guy Beringer, the author of the piece said, ''Brunch is cheerful, sociable and inciting...It is talk-compelling. It puts you in a good temper, it makes you satisfied with yourself and your fellow beings, it sweeps away the worries and cobwebs of the week.''
His sentiment may have been penned well over 100 years ago, but the essence of brunch is still very much the same. The mid-morning-and-well-into-the-afternoon meal really caught on in the US in the 1930s after Hollywood figures and famous hotels promoted it.
But as we all know now, you don’t have to be a movie star or a guest at a posh hotel to enjoy brunch. It’s all about the nosh and company––so this Mother’s Day, enjoy these 5 delectable, egg-less recipes with mom:
