You are here

ever stayed in a wall tent (or a yurt)? tell me about it!

hey folks,

so, the title is pretty self explanatory...have you stayed in a wall tent before for an extended period of time? how was it in coldish/hot weather? tell me allll about it. thanks :)

What's a wall tent?  I lived in canvas housing on a platform in Yosemite during the summer.  It had a heater and the space wasn't that big, so warmed up fast.  We were under trees.  I don't remember it being unreasonably hot.  I wasn't in the tent much during the day, though.

thanks hh, that looks very similar. The ones I'm talking about come with a wood burning stove and have a wood floor.

Have you spent any time in one during colder weather? early spring for example?

Yeah.  Mind had a wood floor and a bear-proof food locker on one side of the tent for food, shampoo, all of our smelly things.

Mine had a gas heater.  A gas heater is better because you don't have to wait for the fire.  Do you know how to start  and keep a fire going?  (Not everyone does.)  Our temperature range was probably about a low of 40 F / 4.5 C in May to a high of 90 F / 32 C in August.  I remember the place heating up pretty quickly, it was probably an 8' x 10' / 2.5 m x 3 m space, so it didn't take much.  The other consideration of a stove setup is that you can't put on a large log for overnight.  The fire would probably burn out sometime overnight or someone would have to get up to add more wood.

I think your tent would be larger than what I stayed in if you had enough room for a stove.  It'd still probably heat up quickly.

awesome. sounds very similar. I camped alot when I was younger but it's been a while now so my fire-building skills and the like need some brushing up. Also I've never camped longer than a couple weeks and never stayed in a wall tent, so basically I just want to get a better idea of what I'm in for if I get a farm internship that I applied for. It's been a long time since I spent a while in a setting that rustic, but I'm excited at the idea. What an adventure.
