Smoky Tofu and Red Bean Burgers

What you need:

1 (14 ounce) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
7 ounces firm tofu, squeezed of excess water and crumbled
1 carrot, grated
1/2 onion, chopped finely
2 cloves garlic, minced
handful fresh parsley, chopped
1/2 cup whole grain breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon all purpose seasoning
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
salt and pepper, to taste

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F, and grease baking sheet. Mash beans in a bowl and add the crumbled tofu.
2. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine. I like to use a pastry cutter or fork to help chop and smoosh the mixture which will make it form into patties easier.
3. You may have a taste in order to adjust seasonings. Shape into patties and place on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes (flipping halfway) or until browned and crispy.
Serve on hamburger buns with grilled onions, lettuce and tomato.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I have made these about 10 times - they are perfect. Every omni I've made them for has found them delicious! Hands down the best vegan burger I've ever had.

How about making this mixture into a loaf.

What a nice dinner loaf  with mashed potatoes  maybe a tomato gravy and some veggies.

Ideas can be endless !!

I will try them all !!

As I try them I will post.

I have not made these yet but they sound Delicious and will make these very soon.

Also, can you freeze the uncooked mixture or, do you have to cook them first and then
perhaps freeze the cooked burgers or, can you do both?

This sounds like you could also use this mixture for Chili and Sloppy Joes. also.
How about meatballs !

This seems to be a versatile recipe.

Can't wait to try it.

Thanks for the Great recipe. ;)b

I've been a vegetarian for 7 years (now a vegan) and my girlfriend, also a vegetarian, made these burgers recently - we've never tried to make our own veggie burgers before.  We couldn't find vegan whole wheat breadcrumbs so we substituted oatmeal instead. The burgers held together very well and were delicious! We also skipped the garlic. We will definitely be making these again!  :-D

Made these for my partner and he really liked them.

I put tofu, beans, spices, in the food processor and pureed til smooth (added half a bouillon cube and a couple dashes of hot sauce), then folded in sauteed carrots and onions, then breadcrumbs.  They held together really well - so well that my partner reheated the leftovers in the toaster :)

By the way, they freeze beautifully! So convenient.

This is my favourite bean burger so far!  I used a  food processor and it shaped up and held together beautifully.

I really liked these!  I omitted the liquid smoke because I don't care for it, I also skipped the onions since mine are looking a bit past there prime and just used extra onion powder.  I used crushed crackers for the bread crumbs and added some sage, thyme and celery salt just because it sounded good.  They didn't seem too solid at the end of the baking time so I decided to cook them a bit longer and forgot about them, but it turned out really nicely anyway.  They had a crisp outside and yet the middle was still nice and tender, really good flavor too.  They held together well too with the extra baking time.  I will be making this again!

These burgers held together really well for me. I used panko bread crumbs because it was all had but I think that worked in my favor. Very nice. Next time I may add some cayenne or jalapeno for some kick.
