The Vegan Monte Cristo
1/4 cup flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 cup water
pinch salt
egg substitute (to account for 1 egg)
3 slices of vegan ham
3 slices of vegan turkey
4 slices of vegan swiss
2 slices of vegan cheddar
2 slices of wheat bread
oil
powdered sugar
Add the flour, baking powder, and salt to a bowl and combine. Then, add the egg substitute and water and mix to produce the batter.
Build the sandwich: Bread, Swiss(2), Ham(3), Cheddar(2), Turkey(3), Swiss(2), Bread.
Prepare a plate with paper towels to soak up residual oil after frying is complete.
Coat/Dip the sandwich in the batter. Ensure that the entire sandwich is coated.
Add a thorough amount of oil to a pan and heat it. A deep fryer is the preferred method but pan frying works for me.
Fry the sandwich, add more batter to the sides of the sandwich if necessary, the idea is to seal the edges. You can splash some oil over the sides with a spatula to help seal them. Flip the sandwich to fry the other side, careful, it's heavy.
After frying, place the sandwich on the paper towels. Once the oil is soaked up coat both sides of the sandwich with powdered sugar.
Now slice it diagonally and serve with a raspberry or grape jam/jelly.
There you have it, the Vegan Monte Cristo!
SO HOW'D IT GO?
This is a great recipe!
My fiancee and I omitted the ham, because I dislike it.
I added red onion to mine, which I sauteed beforehand (YUM)
Gary added Veganaise to his, which he said was wonderful.
We dipped them in maple syrup, and will most certainly be making them again <3.
Where do you find vegan swiss?
I go to a place called 'Follow your Heart' here in the San Fernando Valley, but here's a link to a recipe if you can't find it.

You can go with jack cheese if you can't find swiss, or you can go all cheddar.

I am so glad you posted this! I had my first Monte Cristo at the Blue Bayou at Disneyland. Greatest sandwich ever, most artery clogging too, but totally worth it!
