My bf started eating seafood and dairy again.. I DONT WANT TO :(((

he's about 186lbs and 5'11.. he started to feel weak few days ago and he thinks that hes not getting enough protein. i was actually feeling the same but i dont want to eat those poor fishies and im sure they're not the best for you either. we bought this soy protein shake (supplement) from GMC that has 22g of protein in each serving. i am 5'6 and 120lbs. how much protein a day do i need to keep a good energy? :-\

Not sure about how much you need, but i do know that you don't need meat to get it =-)  I went off veg. for a while because i was weak and stuff too, but found out i wasn't including enough good fats  into my diet.  When I need an energy boost i always reach for a protein/fat combo.  nuts, seeds, bananas with nut butter....

here's a good calculator that will tell you how much of what you need.

I'm vegan, have a crap diet (see What did you cook / Eat today? .....A question to drool for proof), rarely take a multivitamin, and everyone got me paranoid that the reason I was tired all the time was because of my vegan diet.  A couple of months ago I went to the doctor and asked for a whole bunch of nutritional tests and I was perfectly fine on all of them.  I was tired because I needed more intense daily exercise.  Unless your bf only eats oreos, I doubt he could avoid getting enough protein.

What are you eating?  Maybe neither of you are getting enough calories.

im a really strict vegan and i believe i make us food with enough nutrients. in the morning we usually have those organic cereals (Bulk) from the community market or whole foods.. that or hemp waffles loaded with fruits and an OJ or apple juice.. for lunch, a big fat burger loaded with fresh veggies.. (light on vegenaise) .. we eat a lot of seeds, brown rice, veggies and fruits. thanks for the help guys!

quinoa - simple, not very expensive, as easy to make as rice, and it's a complete protein - in and of itself.

A. You don't have to just because he does
B. If he is worried about protein why isn't he doing the research?

Sorry, I don't want to sound like  a bitch, but it bugs me that its always women asking these questions. Don't men eat before they meet us?

Anyway, the tiredness probably isn't due to lack of protein. It could be, but it could also be not enough calories, or a nutritional deficiency, or he's getting sick, or a lot of things. Try eating more whole grains(take a lot longer to digest), and eating little snacks of things like nuts and seeds, beans, raw veggies. It sounds like you're doing well. Either it's not enough food for him, or he just doesn't want to be vegan.

the nice thing about protien is that your body produces its own but unfortunately we need more than what the body can make. most people dive into meat and other nasty stuff to get their protein. While me (we) vegans resort to plant protiens which are better and lower in the food chain of life. I wiegh 220 lb with a body fat index of 14% I go to the gym 5 days a week for 1 1/2 hours and i swallow 230 grams of protein a day.... lololol I eat a lot of plants .. ...

Thankfully my bf went veg this past December. He seems to be doing OK with it. He jokes alot about eating meat. When he does that I tell him, "If you eat meat then you are on your own for making food, 'cuz I'm never touching that crap again." I cook about 90% of our food so he would be SOL. ;)

if you're concerned, get some bloodwork done. If something is wrong, it's not hard to alter your diet to suit. From your post earlier it sounds like you could use more beans and legumes (nuts, beans, peas, lentils etc are the powerhouses! complex carbs instead of simple ones like bread) I felt quite sluggish this winter so I started taking B12 and it has helped alot, but you won't know what the cause is until you look into it by going to get blood tests or seeing a dietician or something. Alot of other folks have mentioned that your calorie intake might be too low, and I was going to say the same thing. Try to incorporate more fats into your diet and see how you feel (even just earth balance on toast, some salad with dressing, using oil when cooking food, eating a handful of nuts etc) :)

i don't really understand why you'd be feeling weak eating 3 or more meals per day.  i go days where i forget to eat meals,  plus have a weekly fast observation and my energy levels remain insanely high.  i've went on sesshin where we've fasted multi days,  and worked from sunrise to sundown with no break,  then sat zazen until it was time for sleep,  and came home feeling pretty damn good.

stress is a major factor in feeling rundown and weak,  that doesn't depend on caloric intake.  a lot of people relieve stress by eating poorly to stimulate endorphin release.  maybe this contributed to him deciding to not only take in more food,  but to make a dietary switch?

I think different metabolisms make a big difference in energy too.  If I go without eating for 4 hours I can feel it!

I've met with a nutritionist just to make sure my daughter and I are getting enough nutrients, (although I've read enough that I'm not worried about the protein thing,) and she said that protein deficientcy is rare....she recommened being mindful of getting enough calcium, B12, and vitamin D.  She was very supportive, (she was at my University not from the back of vegetarian times or anything,) so I realy trusted her advice.  She really stressed the vitamin D thing, (especially because its winter, in MN,) and said that they will be upping the recommended daily amount.  All of these things can be fixed by a good diet, and a good supplement, (vitamin D is only in fortified foods and supplement if you are vegan)

My boyfriend occasionally eats cheese, etc when we go out to eat or something, but I have been strict about not having those foods in our house.  He usually feels sick after doing so...karma..
