new vegan finds!

i'd like to start a thread of new things you happen across or discover that are vegan.  i browse around in the grocery store quite a bit, reading labels, and sometimes find some pretty interesting and surprising vegan foods!

so anyway, one i found this weekend is....banana babies!  they're from diana's bananas and the dark chocolate ones are vegan.  they're just frozen bananas dipped in chocolate, but..mmmm.  the chocolate is a tiny bit waxy, but all in all, i thought it was a pretty good find.

also, many of marie calendar's fruit pies are vegan as well, which is awesome for a yummy, fatty dessert when i don't feel like making one, haha...

anyone else been finding something cool and yummy?

not sure if it's vegan but Annie's products have a no cheese vegetable pizza and i think there no dairy bean burrito which is amazing is vegan.

^amy's roasted vegetable pizza. yes, its delicious!

well, i was short on time today and had the last bit of the tofutti on my bagel this morning. but i needed to frost a cake. luckily, pillsbury cream cheese frosting is vegan. healthy? no, but i hardly eat any processed food so i wont die. in the end it worked and everyone was happy!

Kroger store brand reduced fat graham cracker crust is not only vegan, it is actuall LABELED with the vegan "V" right on the front of the package, along with a lactose free designation.  it's so exciting to see vegan labelling, but i really didn't expect to see it on a traditional grocery store brand package (ie. not whole foods/trader joes)

go kroger!!

Kroger can be pretty awesome - they seem to have a better "health" foods section than other typical crappy grocery chains, at least here.  They also have (or had - I haven't bought it in years) a private label version of the Quaker instant oatmeal "n cream" flavor variety (you know, peaches n cream, strawberries n cream, etc) that was vegan.  I *think.*  I was a pretty ignorant vegan at the time.  Someone should probably check me on this, if they still have it.  But I remember being really psyched.

kroger brand graham crackers here have milk in them.

(not b/c you used it...but just b/c...it is...)

i know, can you believe that?! but duncan hines and betty crocker cream cheese frosting is not vegan. in my opinion, it shouldn't be!

at the dollar store i found some vegan almond windmill shaped cookies.  they are really good, and if you crushed them they could definitely be used for a recipe that called for graham cracker crumbs.

carr's brand whole wheat crackers are also vegan and actually kinda sweet, they'd be a easy sub for graham cracker crumbs, too.  to me they taste more like a cookie than a cracker.

I love the carr's brand whole wheat crackers. They are sweet and wheat, but not too sweet.

There's an east coast pizza chain called Ledo's which is really good...their dough and sauce is vegan.
:)>>>

REALLY?!? Wow, even more reason to love them. Any VegWeb Terps need to take note of this one: Ledo's is a UMD staple!

Not a Terp, but close enough... This is good to know!

swedish fish and sourpatch kids :) and all of the 100 calorie pack cookies :) lorna doones, chips ahoy, and oreos.

Not the Chips Ahoy.  I had a horrible reaction to them about 3 weeks ago and couldn't figure out why.  When I re-read the ingredients there was whey (i think) in them.  At any rate, definitely some dairy.

same with pizza pipeline in the northwest!! and their sauce is surprisingly super delicious without the cheese masking it!

which also means that if you get the garlic breadsticks without cheese they are vegan.  mmmmmmmm. and the last time i had it delivered the delivery guy was extra nice about assuring me that they used different spatulas and everything!

Nice!  Unfortunately I've found that most of my old favorite garlic breads contain butter in the garlic sauce spread.  But, surprisingly- those Papa John's little garlic sauce cups?  Vegan!!  The "lactic acid" listed in the ingredients is the fermented bacteria kind.  I had a Papa John's cheeseless pizza on their 100% whole wheat crust Friday and it was great!

The oatmeal at Corner Bakery is not vegan. They pre-make it with cow secretions. What a disappointment.

more goodies from kroger!  their chocolate pie crust is also labeled with the big vegan "V".  for some reason their original graham cracker crust isnt labeled with it, although the ingredient list looks vegan... maybe the reduced fat and the chocolate ones just have more updated packaging.

also, they have a Kroger Value brand of semisweet chocolate chips thats vegan!  plus theyre only like 1.33 a bag!  The packaging is in a red white and blue bag, so look for that cus they also have other variations of kroger brand semisweet chips (organic, private selection) that are NOT vegan.

bad news

skittles and starburst in the uk ARE NOT suitabe for vegans- mostly because of the colouring- thre's cochineal in for sure and emulsifier 475. They are also coated in shellac.

I'm really not sure about US poptarts from Kellogg's- you need to decipher the long complex chemical bits to know for sure.

Can I just say, bravo to Kellogg's US and Kellogg's UK  for the transparency of their information. Manufacturer's such as MARS should follow their example and not build websites which are not only badly designed and difficult to navigate but fail to list ingredients.

Don't they reliase that most vegan consumers are far more likely to support brands which disclose the facts and allow us to make informed choices? For example, I may need to avoid some Kellogg's products but I currently have to avoid ALL MARS products!

On teh topic of 'chips' or crisps as we call hem over here, I eat Kettle chips, who have a lovely clear website which devides their products into vegan, vegatarian, kosher, gluten-free and so on. Balsamic vinegar and sea salt anyone...... ;)b

I found a huge bag of vegan chocolate chips at F00d Lion (now Bl00m in some states, I guess) that was vegan. It is processed in the same plant as dairy products, but I'm okay with that as long as it's only dairy, and the ingredients were 100% vegan. Hooray! I made a batch of chocolate silken-tofu pudding pops, a batch of oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies, and now I'm making another batch of the pumpkin chocolate-chip cupcakes from VCTOtW. It's a BIG BAG, and cheap too.

I got some organic double chocolate "cookie buttons" on sale at Shoppers Drug Mart (are those in the States too?) - the brand is called Nativa and can only be found at Shoppers. They're nummy, made with *real* ingredients too. And no milk, even though it's chocolate chocolate! I was surprised. And actually, most Nativa products are vegan - sans a few things with organic honey.

I THINK cookie crisp is vegan.

Once again, I would like to add the disclaimer that I am new to this, so some of the longer chemical names and stuff I'm not good with yet.

So, feel free to correct me, and def. read the label to double check!

Heh, Cinnamon Teddy Grahams are vegan. No honey-- they use the natural goodness of HFCS instead. :D
