You are here

yet ANOTHER restaurant I can't eat at in my little effin town!

SO, I've already complained that my Mexican Restaurant secretly puts chicken stock in all of the sauces (I have ONE thing I can get there).

We went to the Thai place tonight and I had never asked before if they use fish sauce...the answer was "absolutely". I was asking if they could make me something with out it and he was really rude about it and said NO. they cook the sauces beforehand. He actually had another waiter take us (this would be our 3rd server in 10 minutes) and I could hear him bitching in the kitchen about how I didn't want fish sauce. The poor guy who came up to us looked really timid and I asked him if they didn't like me because I was asking questions. He said they are really mean and that they dont believe in allergies and think if people do't want fish sauce they are just being picky. this guy was really nice and i could tell he hated working there and felt bad for us.

So anyway, its our 11th anniversary and dh had already ordered Thai tea and noah was eating his packed dinner and so I didn't want to fuss, so I decided to order soup (one had no fish) and salad. Then i find out that even the peanut dressing has fish sauce. UGH> I gave poor timid waiter $6 as a tip and left. they were seriously RUDE to us (the thai people, not our waiter)
we went to the pizza place and I got a cheeseless calzone, and lyle cried the whole time

some anniversary! lol

anyway, there is only one restaurant that I feel comfortable eating at in my town, and they are only open for lunch.
at least I know now and can stop accidentally ingesting fish and chicken parts.

i should add that even though these thai people were mean to us and i will never go back there, I am not holding it against the people of thailand and will not assume that all thai people i meet in the future are mean. just the ones who work at thai basil in my town.

grrrr. end rant

bhahahaha i love the disclaimer -i totally know why you added it but i still think it's funny

*someone*s gonna call you a racist in..

i'm actually thinking of going in there later to complain to the owner. not only about the fish sauce, but about our horribly mean waiter! >:D

I simply mark places off my list of where I can eat.  The Thai place in my town uses chicken stock in everything.  Apparently not even going so far as to use fish sauce at all, just chicken.  But 20 miles away, the Thai place can accommodate any request I toss at them.  With a smile and a thank you too!

Some places just act like they dont want our business, so I dont give it to them.

exactly....it was the attitude and talking about me in the kitchen (and refusing to wait on us) that is causing me not to return. I really wanted to stay because i wanted to set a good example for noah.....and not have him thinking that eating out is impossible.

There are other thai places I can go that I know do not use fish sauce. this one just happens to be 2 miles away or less. maybe he though we were tourists? little does he know, i rule this town and will tell everyone I know not to go there! ok, only part of that last statement is true.

but yeah, i will also be driving 15 miles for thai now.  :(

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with a particular Thai owned restaurant.  Happily, most Thais I've met are very nice.  In the past I've gone to Thai Bay and Thai Coconuts in Clearwater and both are family owned and the people were very accommodating and happy to leave out fish sauce on request.  I'm sorry your anniversary was tarnished by the bad experience....and happy anniversary!

In all seriousness, I'm sorry to hear that your anniversary outing was ruined by a bunch of buttholes.

yeah, the disclaimer was just a cover up!
thanks....we are laughing about it , at least, and after we ate at the pizza place we walked by the thai place and we both held up our middle fingers (without the kids seeing!) . that'll teach em!

you should leave them a review on yelp.com so other veg*ns are warned, too.

Most Thai places I've ordered from/been to have been pretty nice about the fish sauce (says whatever does/doesn't have it, and what they can make without it usually... or even if they can't, it's not like "silly white person! thai food is for... non-picky people!" (i wanted to say kids, but they're probably more picky)). Anyway, a lot of the vegan places in L.A. are Thai restaurants (I'm told it has something to do wit the Buddhism), and apparently fish sauce can be subbed with light soy sauce (not the same, but at least the substitute isn't like some 1:2:1 ratio of agave, mangosteen, and plum oil)
