Why are you a vegetarian?

I have to write a paper for my english class and I'm doing it on the vegetarian vs meat eating. So if you would be so kind as to help by telling me out of these three options which best describes why you are vegetarian/vegan. 1. Animal Cruelty 2. Healthier than eating meat 3. You were raised that way and it just stuck or if you dont fall into any of those then just put 4. Please try to keep responses short b/c i have a feeling this may get a lot of responses. Thanks!!!!! :)
1.
Do you need explanation or just the number?
Also, I would say "animal rights" for myself more so than just "animal cruelty." You can infringe upon another's rights without being outright cruel.
Good luck with your paper! ;)b
ditto on the animal rights!
The environment is another big reason a lot of people go veg*n, so you might want to include that as an option.
Personally, I'd go with 2 as my main reason.
4. There are people starving around the world and the production of meat is incredibly inefficient. Did not seem fair to be eating whatever I wanted when my diet was having adverse effects on people all over the world.
One of my reasons for being veggie is fear of eating contaminated food.
4 (foofie's explanation is good)/environment
It started out as #1 and that is still my main motivation, but now I am also concerned about #2 and also the environmental factor that someone mentioned.
I went vegetarian simply because the only meat I liked was chicken strips. In trying to find better things to eat using the internet, I came up with all the images and articles about the mistreatment of animals and the effect of animals as commodoties on the planet, and I found them to be arguments that my conscious could not ignore.
2 and 4 (environment) and foofie's explanation, which could both be lumped into "The meat industry is just a damn poor use of limited resources"
1.
I never liked the idea of eating meat for as long as i can remember, and kept trying to go vegetarian when i was 6 or 10 or something. Hah. Finally knew enough and was able to actually stick with it.
My main reason is animal rights and such, if we can survive fine without harming animals, then why should we?
But, i continue to be for all of the reasons listed and said.
So.

That ^, but health/environment are also important factors
4. I always said, for me, it just "made sense" As I grew up and figured out the world for myself, it seemed that eating meat didn't fit in anywhere in my construction of how the world should be.
Also what about religious reasons? I always said that my understanding of this developed as my conceptualization of religion and spirituality developed.
#1 was the second reason. #2 is the primary reason why I'm cutting back on all animal products.
A combo of all, but health and I don't want to eat rotting animal carcasses. Unfortunately we don't 'save' any animals from slaughter, just from our plate.... they are still mass-bred and slaughtered, our dollars just don't contribute to our industry...

But everyone has a choice, and together our choices can make a big impact, it does affect the industry...it helps to not only *avoid* animal products, but to also support the veg lifestyle/ companies.
For me, its mainly animal rights.
But, to me, there is no reason to eat meat ...economically, resources/ environment, health, karma, etc....*esp* when living in a situation where we have such a choice.
4)
-Semi-traumatic experiences living in a farming/hunting family.
-Ecological reasons (it's not efficient to feed corn to a cow and eat the cow when you could just eat the corn and get more energy).
-Moral reasons (eating meat didn't fit into how I felt about living things, and I realized chickens and pigs and cows were really the same as a dog or cat).
Good luck with your paper! Why didn't you do a poll? It would be easier for you to get the numbers. :)
I didn't do a poll b/c I am dumb!!! Thanks.
I have always thought that eating meat was gross...
I'm with the" it's a combination" group now.
I initially started because it's healthier than eating meat. As I learned and read more over they years animal welfare issues became important to me, as well as the environmental impact.
1-animals
2-health
4-environment
4-the effects my decisions have in ending world hunger
all of them =-) :)>>>
