Who are some of your favorite artists?

Classical or current/ abstract or realism... all is welcome.

I love John William Waterhouse... as noted by my avatar/picture thing...
but I also like Maxfield Parrish too!

I'm so interested in learning new artists too, so please list whoever...

I paint in watercolor alot, so watercolor artists are very much needed!! haha

I like sculptures and installation art, so people like Ilya Kabakov and Christo.

He's quite mainstream and "pop"-ish, but I really love Jack Vettriano in terms of subject matter and theme/tone (less so his technique, which is just ok).  This is his most popular piece:

But lots of his other stuff is darker and more explicit.

Not the best artist by a long shot, but I really like his paintings as little stories/vignettes.  I decorated my living room with them.

Wow, I wasn't really considering installation work... but they really are amazing!  I can't even imagine how to start something like that!  Very gorgeous works... (Where would you put them in a house? haha)

These are really pretty.  The Palate choices are rather pleasing ^_^.
I'm in school for Illustration and a thing my teacher said to us was sort of eye-opening... (just for illustration business)
It was (not quoted).... make your painting so unique that someone can't get the same effect as a picture.

I think that's why I'm not as fond of current realism unless they do something wow (like technique/brushstrokes)
but then again, it takes some killer talent to do that kind of stuff so I really respect painters for what they do.

I love art. ^_^

;D  I went to see Christo's umbrellas.  Only my front room is large enough to fit just one.

Side note:  My college roommate worked at an art place with work and gallery space for artists.  One day Christo was over for dinner (or something, I think it was dinner).  No one told me it was him.  I had an umbrella t-shirt I was told he would have autographed.

SYLVIA JI!!

She uses such vibrant colors!  And I love her portrayal of the feminine form as being so independent and confident.  Runner ups are Monica Canilao and wow, this is going to bother me that I can't remember his name.  Graphic artist who has a piece called either "Refugee" or "Refugees" which when I first saw was incredibly moving.

Wow, so many.  Its going to take me some time to look at all of these, but I hope to get some inspiration!

I'm not really into art in that sense, but I guess I'd have to say Ralph Steadman.  Mainly for his associations with Hunter S. Thompson and Kurt Vonnegut and that crowd.

I just watched Gonzo the day before yesterday. That's the movie about Hunter S. Thompson's life. Pretty cool I never knew he stayed with Hells Angels for a year to write his book. I love Vonnegut also. They have awesome drawings. Speaking of drawings I love John Lennon's work too. My BF sirensong got me a calendar for Christmas with a lot of his sketches in it. here's one

I also love the artwork from Yellow submarine but I'm not sure who it's from.

I really love Salvadore Dali of course.

I think Joseph Wright of Derby is amazing, and this painting absolutely blows my mind:

I love El Greco for the way he paints fingers...

And yeah, Waterhouse is good business.  There's lots more but I'm too tired...

Yay John Lennon art! I love In His Own Write.
Yellow Submarine's art director was Heinz Edelmann.

One of my favorite artists is Gerhard Richter. http://infinitesimally.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/gerhard-richter-betty.jpg

I saw an amazing show by Tara Donovan and I am now in love with her work.  http://www.todayandtomorrow.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/tara_donovan_1.jpg

SYLVIA JI!!

She's from San Francisco, right?  I think I went to one of her exhibitions when I lived there.  I was impressed.

Yes she is.  I have always wanted to go to one of her exhibitions.  Hopefully when I go to the west coast later this year she will have one!

Robert Bateman (wildlife and Canadian)
Terry Issac (wildlife)
Seery Lester (wildlife)

And this lady who is incredibly talented.  For those into gothic art: http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/strangeling_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_mdoZ

I am decorating my pink bedroom (guest room) totally in her art.  I am doing the albino fairy prints with fairy and albino animald as well as some of her pink fairies.

The expression in the eyes is unbelievable.  Also got some prints that are not pink and albino.  They will be displayed elsewhere.

Escher of course.
Guiseppe Archimboldo, the veg*n's portraitist! ;D
And the guy who did pointilism...starts with a B...(total blank, head's gone) No, wait--Seurat. That's his name. ("Starts with a B"????)

And the Dutch master who mostly painted women working, but was a master of light falling in from the window. What was his name? Ver Meer. I am startled that no one in the commentary of Ang Lee's "Sense and Sensibility" mentions the fact that his use of light and colour in that film is pure Ver Meer.

And who's the American artist who's famous for that painting of people in the diner at night? I can't remember his name, ever.

Hockney can be good, or postcard bad. His good stuff is really good. His bad stuff stinks. But of course one person's stink is another person's fantastic.

I'm still exhausted, I got a good sleep last night but before that was awake for like 36 hours or more. Bear with me.
