The U.S. Department of Agriculture this morning announced they're doling out $342 million in loans to help fund the expansion of broadband into portions of rural America. The loans are delivered as part of the Rural Development Broadband Loan and Loan Guarantee Program, which provides low-interest broadband loans to rural communities of 20,000 residents or less -- with areas without broadband getting priority. "Providing state-of-the-art communications services in rural areas promotes business development, increases job opportunities and improves access to educational services," insists Agriculture Secretary Ed Schafer.
I might be making too many jumps here, but you know, this is how it usually goes, in some way or another. It's a conspiracy, I say! ;)
i completely agree...i feel like such a whack-job sometimes, because i'm always thinking that everything is a conspiracy and everyone is in bed with everyone....but it really is usually true! like in the article, they are like, "most adults get 1/3 (or was it 1/2?) of the recommended amount of milk as suggested by the food pyramid" well, no shit! the food pyramid is funded by the dairy industry and the meat industry!
i just couldn't believe that the article actually said "hormones or no, keep drinking milk" WTF?!?!!? >:( >:( >:(

fav quote from above article:
"Federal policy—heavily influenced by the meat and dairy lobbies—literally forces the Sec. of Agriculture to favor beef, pork, and other high-protein foods over healthier items when purchasing surplus commodities for federal feeding programs. As a result, in 2001, the USDA spent $350 million on surplus beef and cheese—more than double the amount spent on fruits and vegetables. Federal policy also prohibits schools from serving soymilk or other nondairy beverages as part of a subsidized lunch unless a child brings a doctor’s note saying he or she has a medical reason not to drink cow’s milk. (PCRM believes this policy is discriminatory because so many African, Hispanic, Native and Asian Americans are lactose intolerant.)"
Conspiracy or big fat bully?????
That article is so irritating. Couldn't find the auther listed on it.....maybe I was missing it. And the feedback button took me no where. And then this pop up to subscribe to "Eating Something or Ever" kept coming up.....grrrrrrrrr
A bunch of bs I say. Way do we need so much of a substance that is not even natral to us? I mean it`s all just so stupid. I may be wrong but doesn`t a high protein diet leach calcium from the body causing ostioperosis?
Why did it take Wal-Mart to get everyone thinking about how milk is produced and how its production may affect your health?
Also, LOL:
"While scientific studies have proven inconclusive, it's important to focus on what we do know."

Very LOL!
Sigh. So dumb. Dumb, dumb peeps.
Ahhhh yes, the buzzword: Studies have shown. In the US, the "studies" are always done in Europe (and so no information or stats are given); here in Europe they always cite "a study at an American university" because they think that will give it more clout. Never say which university, though.
Of course we know that 98.76% of all statistics are made up on the spur of the moment.
What an entertaining article! :>
Anywho, I clicked on the 2 links that are supposed to offer more information on nondairy sources of calcium. They both just take you to the home page of Cookinglight.com. Hmmm - I guess I'm supposed to search through their site to find it.
