Swine Flu Shot at School

Ok, so idk if I'm posting this in the right section. Sorry if I'm not. But my school's having this free H1N1 shot and it says "Is your child allergic to eggs?" And I asked my aunt why it said that and she said some protein from an egg is in the shot. So can you still get the shot if you are allergic or vegan? Idk what to tell the ppl. Anyone know for sure?
This is a very interesting read!

Please be careful--there is a lot of misinformation in that article. It is written by.....whom? Someone at a raw food restaurant blog? And it provides very few legitimate references (one of which is a typed pdf from the author him/herself!)
Here is a much more thoroughly researched, cited article about the topic from Science-Based Medicine:

There are concerns about the vaccine, of course. The swine flu vaccine in the 1970's had serious issues. But this is not that vaccine! It is much more pure. Most of this hubbub about how dangerous the vaccine is is the stuff of conspiracy theorists. It is hard to find unbiased information about the topic, but it exists!
What information can you trust these days? Everyone has an agenda. Ill just take my chances with the flu...
I've been in contact with three people with confirmed swine flu. I shared a bed with someone who had a nasty flu. I just eat well and rest. I have no real need for this vaccine, but my mother thinks I should get it because I'm under 24 and have diabetes. I'm not going to, though.

I'm not necessary pro- or anti- vaccine, for certain. But just because there are varying agendas doesn't mean it's not worthwhile to sift through the bullshit. I don't think it's responsible to spread misinformation, that's all. But I don't really buy into the "trust no one" mentality, you all know that already.

This is true, but its getting harder and harder to sift through the bullshit.
Apparently lots of vaccines aren't vegan. I don't know specifics, but my strict vegan friend was telling me about it.
That, and some tattoo inks.
They use egg as a stabilizer in a few of them, and I believe all of them have mandatory animal testing to prove they're safe. So, no they aren't vegan.
I wouldn't compromise my own health for this.
I've gotten the flu once, and that was in 6th grade when I first had to deal with a New York winter.
I was sick for 3 days, tops. It may have not even been the flu.
The regular flu shot was mandatory for me. All the schools in the university mandate it (though I'm in vet school... maybe I'll pass it back to pigs?). We haven't heard if we have to get H1NI though...
Apparently you're not supposed to get the shot if you have had or still have Guillan-Barre syndrome, but I'm not sure why.
From the translations I've done in medicine, G-B Syndrome is actually one of the side effects of having had swine flu or Legionnaire's Disease.
Many years ago I translated some articles for medical journals re: swine flu and Legionnaire's. They already knew back then that swine flu transferred to humans. This was in the early 90's that the journal articles came out in serious medical journals. The kind that have to be juried by other doctors before they can publish.
I'm not saying it's not a serious illness with serious side effects for some people, because it is. It's just not new.
YG,
You're right....the 1918-1919 flu pandemic was a strain of the swine flu. It killed LOTS of people and helped make Howard Hughes a crazy recluse (being quarantined with his germaphobe mother). This is why so many officials are concerned and there are mandatory inoculations in highly susceptible, densely, closed in populations.

Exactly. It bothers me to see it treated with a passing glance like it was the common cold.
We probably won't have enough inoculations at my school. Which sucks....because it's a school.....and swine flu has already been reported in my city. They're really good about sending home any kids with even a chance of having it, but it's still scary to think that kids might be carriers before they're symptomatic. And then I get it and pass it to some elderly woman at the supermarket, or a kid. Soooo scary.
It blows my mind that there are mandatory vaccinations. If you do not want something put in your body nobody has the right to tell you otherwise.... completely blows my mind.

The reason why is because it affects other people. There are lots of laws that have to do with what we put in our bodies. I could choose to drink and drive, but that endangers other people, so it is illegal.
A flu epidemic is a major crisis. We might not have the resources to take care of everyone if that happened. It is mandated at certain places for that reason. At a university, for example, the health center might not have the resources to treat everyone who might possibly come down with the flu, which would be incredibly dangerous and deadly, so they choose the vaccine instead sometimes. Vaccinating SOME people doesn't do the job either.
Think what would happen if all our kids weren't required certain vaccinations for school. I would NOT send my kid to a school with other kids who hadn't been vaccinated for......polio, measles, rubella, etc.
I mean, like anything, it's a gamble (just like driving in a car, riding an airplane, etc). I think it's just irresponsible for, say, healthcare workers not to get vaccinated. Perhaps they shouldn't choose that field if they don't want that responsibility.
Polio and meningitis is one thing, but this flu is another. It has been around for what? A year now? If it was such a crisis wouldn't things be a lot worse? I do not know a single person who has had any kind of flu recently... but I know people who are getting the shot. Its all fear marketing... these vaccines are a product and corporations will do their best to push them, we live in a society centered on profit. 30 million die a year from hunger but there are no alarm bells to be heard ringing everywhere. Why? Because there is no profit to be had feeding the poor.
for all those interested in continuing the discussion of required/enforced vs free will when it comes to vaccinations, I started this thread in the food fight forum so we can discuss this topic further.

Most people who work with pigs (farmers, veterinarians, slaughterhouse workers, etc) get swine flus; it crosses species all the time, this is just a particularly bad strain, crossed with an avian flu. I guess that's why they started insisting it be called H1N1 instead of swine flu, since older literature (talking about how 75% of swine workers/vets have contracted it) might have scared people.
I will say that around 5 otherwise healthy adults, and about three children have died of the swine flu here. My friends 4 year old got airlifted to the hospital a couple of weeks ago, and the girl in the bed next to her died of it.
