Hi Everybody!! :)
First of all: this is a great site and a super forum! ;)b
I"ve been a vegetarian for more than 10 years. I am trying to change to vegan.
I thought it was going pretty well, until I realized that i was losing weight: I weighed 54 kg (120 lb) three or 4weeks ago. Now I should be by 50 kg (110 lb).
I do eat a lot of fruits and veggies. I know it's not enough...
How much lentils or beans do you eat a day? Should I introduce them for every meal?
Thanx!!
I have no idea because I haven't had the weight loss problem, but WELCOME!!!!!
yeah, man cannot live on fruits and veggies alone.... ;)
Be sure you are REPLACING foods you used to eat, not just eliminating them. You probably have an overall calorie deficit going on. Also, be sure to include plenty of healthy fats in your diet, like the ones found in nuts, avocados and olive oil. There is also a place for (whole) grains. Have you seen this food pyramid for vegans? I caught that you are in another country and this is a US style pyramid but it is fairly self explanatory, Look it over and then try and incorporate a few more foods into your daily diet. Good luck!

(oh and can you tell me EXACTLY what you are eating and how much, ten lbs in two weeks...what i wouldn't do.... ::) okay, don't really tell me....)

VHZ... I'll have to stop calling you "J.Crew model" if you do that. Naughty VHZ, naughty. :-*
I think I need to learn about nutrition.

When I first went vegan, I did lose a few pounds, because I no longer ate every doughnut, cookie, muffin or brownie that I was offered. Could that be it? If so, just learn vegan baking; you'll put that weight back on in no time. ::) Nevermind. You should listen to Zealia.
I really thought I would lose more weight than I have moving from vegetarian--> vegan. No big deal though, I just have a huge appetite! VHZ gave some great advice. I used that vegan food pyramid in the beginning, and tracked what I was eating to make sure I was eating enough/enough of the right things/etc. Yep..fruits, veggies, grains, nuts, meat analogs (tofu, tempeh, etc.), non-dairy milks, and do some vegan baking!
Nuts, nuts, nuts! Add to cereal, salad, pasta, etc...
i've actually gained weight since being vegan. i weigh more than i ever have, and i have a well-defined belly now. it's probably more about me getting older, though. i think i'm right at the age where my metabolism slows down and i have to start paying more attention to what i eat.
if you really wanna gain weight back, you could eat a whole lot of faux meat and cheese. i assume that stuff is horrible for you. but yeah, i would say nuts, beans, and avocados.
Make sure you have a variety of different food groups in each meal. A grain, beans, vegetable and/or fruit in each meal will ensure you are getting all that you need in a diet. When I first went vegan I knew nothing about the variety of foods I actually could eat and lost over 6 pounds in less than 2 weeks. After introducing more grains and beans to my diet I gained the weight back.

Same ;D I loveee it (i'm way to small ugh 105, what i am now, is the most i've weighed)
I'd just say like everyone else, dont just give up on food/recipes that you want because of things you cant eat, replace everything to the max. And snacks are always yummy. A bag of chocolate chips mabye?
Chocolate is your friend ;)b
Ok, j/k.
Fruits and veggies are healthy, but they can't be your entire diet alone. Legumes are good, but I wouldn't say you need too too much a day - I think grains are more paramount. Fruits and veggies have lots of nutrients, but grains & legumes have lots of *other* nutrients that you need too.
See if following the vegan-food-pyramid-thing works for you. You can use this site http://www.nutritiondata.com/ to figure out calories/nutrient content in your various foods if you're just going to try upping your daily caloric intake. They also have this tool http://www.nutritiondata.com/tools/calories-burned which calculates how many calories you need per day to maintain your weight based on age, gender, height, weight, general physical activity, and specific physical activity (e.g. 30 minutes of running at 5.0mph per day). It'll tell you your BMI (not always useful, but whatever), minimum of most nutrients per day, and "recommended macronutrient distribution" (that's the least helpful part - IMHO, it recommends waaay too much protein ). In my case I think the caloric recommendations are too high (about 3,000 for my level of activity), but then they might be spot-on for someone trying to gain some weight back!
NUTS LEGUMES AND AVOCADOS!
Eat 5 times a day
try lara/luna/mojo/cliff bars!
mmmmm cliff bars :hotforyou:
LARA BARS.
I've never had those, but
CLIFF BARS
I've never had those but,
LARA BARS ARE YUMMY, TOO.
if you are eating when you are hungry you should be having a problem. since you are a new vegan i would expect that you are not as familiar with what is and isn't vegan and you have a lot of elimination going on in your diet. when i first went vegan i brought snacks with me EVERYWHERE. the last thing i wanted was to get stuck somewhere without anything to eat. i have now become so comfortable with it that i know what/where/when i can get vegan food and how my body reacts to different meals (how long i have until i get hungry again, etc.)...
it will come with time but one of the most important things is incorporating good-for-you whole foods with fats into your diet like nuts and avocados. i probably eat about an avocado a day :)>>> i also do a lot of nuts/seeds and nut/seed milks. when i first went vegan i ate a ton of cereal/granola, sandwiches (like w/ avo and hummus), snack on fruits and veggies, and make a nice well-balanced dinner. of course, i eat nothing like that now, but even eating that way i had no problems with weight loss.
also, i agree with everyone about taking up vegan baking if you like baked goods. i baked vegan before i went vegan so i had no transition period with that (unfortunately!).
i probably eat about an avocado a day :)>>>
Yummmmmm.
Avo sandwiches are da bomb. That's right. Da bomb.
