Hugely great news...... Tweety, please read.
Many of you know my dog Cali was a rescue mange pup. She has struggled for her life and nearly died. In October 2008, she had her first clear mite skin scrape. She needs 3 to be deemed mange free. Tonight she went for another scrape and has been off the medication for 3 months. MITE FREE!!!!!!!!! One more scrape in 6 months.
She did well on home cooking but was very ill at the time. Then I listened to the powers that be to put her on dog food (what a mistake). She started to lose her hair and I was so sure the mange was back.
Since starting her on a raw diet May 20th, hair has started to grow in places it hasn't been for 1 1/2 years.
When my vet came in and said not a mite to be found, I nearly started to cry. I would love to be able to post the pictures of her at her worst but I am not digital.
Tweety, if I emailed you pictures, would you be able to post them?
Today was a great day!
I never gave up on my girl. If you see the gross pictures, you will realize the struggle Cali and I had.
That's great news! It sounds like you know exactly what she needs. She's so lucky to have you! :)
Awe! Thats great Di!!! I've seen so many sad stories of dogs with mange, its great to know that Cali is doing good. Shes lucky she had some one like you to take care of her!!!!!

Thanks so much Dalida. After losing Isabela, my Mexican street dog to aggressive pancreatic cancer three years after getting rid of her heartworm, babesia and many parasites, I struggled with taking on a rescue with health issues. I vowed no more dogs. Isabela died June 1st 2006. Cali arrived September 23rd, 2006. Guess I can't live without a dog. I seem to always adopt the sickly ones no one would want.
Cali is a joy and blessing. And SHE IS MITE FREE!!!!!!!!
Calista was 3 in December. I hope I have many more years with her. She is an alpha dog with other dogs. She is also playful, goofy and silly. She has many doggy friends. They all know she is the boss. Nine months in a shelter with little human interaction in Greece, she is becoming a most amazing and trusting dog. Maybe because so many people love her.
It has taken a long time but I hope she now is with me for another 50 years! ;D

Thanks Sarah! I am truly happy today! Dog food has made her lose her fur but since putting her on a raw diet May 20th, her hair is growing in. I should never have listened to the powers that be to put her on dog food considering I have home cooked for my pets for at least 15 years. The hair loss made me scared to death to take her to the vets because I was sure the mange was back. Cali although rare in young dogs has hypothyroidism as well.
I am hoping Tweety can post some pictures of her at her worst. Maybe someone else can if he can't.
My family, none of whom I live with questioned why I took in Isabela and Cali. Why didn't I just get a healthy puppy. Isabela had 3 1/2 years of love after living on the streets of Mexico for 6 or so years. Her absence leaves a hole in my heart. Everyone loved her including the residents at a nursing home. Actually Isabela is still missed by my family and everyone who met her.
Cali has touched the hearts of many because they have seen her struggle and her will to live. Yes, I helped but she was the fighting force.
Now, being mange free, she can live a long and happy life.
Sorry I have rambled but I am stoked today. Truly an amazing day!
So good to hear :)>>> I love seeing people take in the dogs that truly need the help.
If you don't get a hold of Tweety, you can email pictures to me if you wish, I'd really like to see how far she's come!

Yes, not very pleasant! Sorry about your breakfast.
Thanks everyone! Sarah, I sent you the pictures.
If you can post them, please write in the subject line, gross and disturbing or something to that effect. Well not for the good ones. :)
If the mite scrape comment was unnerving, the pictures will be really offensive.
Thanks so much,
Di

Sarah, you are the best! Thanks for posting them for me. Now people can put a face to a name. Cali was always beautiful. Even during the bad times. I was the only one to think so and to the many that told me to put her to sleep..... how wrong were they!
oh, di, that is so awesome! and so nice to see cali after all of these years hearing about her!
Cali is so lucky to have you, Di. It's amazing what you've done with her.
Thanks Hespedal & VeganChristine! I hope I never have to go through that again. Spending all my free time with Cali in the bedroom she was in, wiping the yucky stuff off her with tea tree oil and warm cloths. Yet, through all of it, she would get off the bed, come downstairs and use her pee pads. She could barely move. I took her food to her every night and fed her in the bedroom. I had to throw the bed away when she got over the ugly times. It stunk, was covered in blood and the mattress was a right off. It was one of the old IKEA beds when their mattresses were different sizes than ours. So I couldn't have got a new mattress to fit it as IKEA now uses standard size mattresses. Had the bed for over 20 years so not a big deal.
Now Miss Cali is requesting that we go out and enjoy the beautiful weather!
Thanks to everyone who posted.
Di
Today, I noticed new hair sprouting out of a hairless area! Today is a good day!!!!!!!!!
Awe, thats great Di!!!
What an amazing recovery thanks to an amazing person. I cannot imagine having the patience and dedication to do that. Di, I am very impressed and I am so happy that Cali is doing well.
