Favourite 'only in America' foods

I just had a brainwave *ouch* last night that I have a good friend due to return to New Zealand from the States in two weeks time.  I'm constantly seeing/hearing about all these specialty products/ cooking/baking supplies that you all have available over there, and thought I could put in a request for her to pick up something awesome for me.

But I've got a complete mind blank as to what kinds of things you can get there that we can't get here...

Any ideas from anyone living on the other side of the world?

Everything I'm thinking of is refrigerator food....so it wouldn't transport well....I'll keep thinking...

yeeaaah that would not go so well... but thanks for thinking! : )

hmmmm, not sure what you have.  Lot's of good snack food, Ting's, vegan marshmellow, skittles, crackers, sweet hot chili dorito's.
Lot's of good baking supplies

question: do you have vanilla extract in NZ? I know I'm gonna bring tons of it with me when I go to Germany because it doesn't seem to exist there. but if you have it then obviously no need to have her bring it.

I second Lubi's Tings, vegan marshmallows (though those can be hard to find), and Skittles. mmmmm.

My boyfriend says, "peanut butter and peanut butter candy, like chik-o-stix, decaffeinated tea, dr. pepper and root beer, bagels, and mexican food products." we have no idea what you can get in NZ though.

aww you guys rock.
what is a ting?
I don't actually like marshmellows, and we have skittles , we also have peanut butter, but I don't know about peanut butter candy

I'm really annoyed that I can't think of what I've seen that made me think 'I wish we could get that here'...

Maybe specialty baking supplies though... Algae, we have vanilla essence in the supermarket, I don't know if that's the same as vanilla extract.

haha, yeah I'm not being very helpful, sorry.

If by candy you mean, like, a sweet, we would call that a lolly.

haha, I don't really know how 'cool' lollies are, but go for it!
Lubi, I googled them and now kind of know what you're talking about, I might see if she can find some because at least they'll be light, which helps with packing.

Also, I think I've thought of something, but need to check with Theo/Heli whether they know if we can get it anywhere here, but I've never seen agave nectar and see it in recipes here aaaallll the time.  I wanna try!

I was thinking boiled peanuts. But the kinds in cans that you can buy at stores arent the best.

haha Sarah, yess, I do need to try those.  but if they're not so good from a can, I don't want to be put off. Were you happy with the ones you made the other day? You should send me the recipe/method and I'll have a go : )

oooh, also: liquid smoke.

I was gonna say liquid smoke coz I reeeeeally want some, but you got there before me.

Also, someone mentioned vegan twinkies once and as crap as it is I would definitely want one of those (but again difficult to come by)

I can't think of much else though, but that's probably because I'm not in the US!

I would think alot of stuff would be cheaper in the US too.  Do you have chocolate chips, butterscotch chips?
Jojo's from Trader Jo's are good, and cheap.
I love Peanut Butter co. white chocolate pb
nutritional yeast?  not sure if you have that

*please say they have NY in NZ*

butterscotch chips?  Vegan ones?  Sounds interesting!

yeah, that's what I was thinking
We can get dark/dairy free chocolate chips, but I don't like chocolate, though I've never heard of butterscotch chips and they sound goooood.
White chocolate peanut butter? really? vegan? whaooo that sounds crazy!
We have nutritional yeast : )

yes. you should just get them to buy you some in a bag. dustin's grandma sent us some bagged boiled peanuts and they aren't as amazing as fresh but still great.

oww, you probably can't make boiled peanuts because you have to have RAW peanuts to start and they don't sell those, like, anywhere except for the south. i can't make boiled peanuts in california (hence, dustin's grandma sending us bagged ones) :(.
