What did you cook/eat today: Parents and Kids Edition!

So...who's willing to share what their kids actually eat on a day to day basis? My little girl is 7 and in 2nd grade in public school IN TEXAS, so almost everything she eats has to be homemade. She just ate hummus on toast and two pickles for breakfast because I'm busy answering work emails. Oops.

Yesterday:
B: vanilla Silk yogurt w/strawberries and blueberries. Chai for her, coffee for me.
L: Tacos w/black beans, spinach, salsa (avocado on mine), leftover rice
S: popcorn, smoothies
D: giant veggie stirfry (squash, broccoli, cabbage, baby bok choy, carrots, celery, green onion, garlic, snow peas) with tofu, steamed rice
We made some strawberry muffins (from Vegan Brunch) for dessert...and I had two glasses of wine  :P

Other parents...chime in please?

So I've been reading this thread enviously since its inception. Here is what my daughter's meals have looked like:

Pre-B: breastmilk
B: breastmilk
morning snack: breastmilk
second morning snack: breastmilk

....you get the idea

BUT today:

B: breastmilk
morning "snack": AVOCADO!

Six months old and I can now participate!

Quick question (ok, maybe not so quick):

Have any of you health-minded moms done anything about the crap food at your kid's schools? I've had my daughter in Waldorf up until this year, where they've always fed the kids awesome snacks. This year in public school I'm shocked at the so-called food that is being given to everyone at snack time. This week it was grocery store cupcakes (not vegan & my daughter ate one), twizzlers, & marshmallows. Just wondering if you all know where to start--I'm not really involved in the school other than volunteering once a week or so.

Thanks for any ideas--and for letting me vent a little ;)!

thats a bummer Quintess, you would think all schools would start to be more on track!!! There are many kids dealing with food allergies/sensitvities and some schools decrease or ban sugar....Addressing the school board and/or admin. at the school about these topics might be taken more seriously if you had some research...(I'm sure there is some out there...) showing coorelations between behavior/grades/etc and sugar.....etc.....also rallying with other like minded parents..(especially those with kids with allergies, because no school wants to get sued,) may help get the 'big people' more concerned...

okay, what have we been eating, lots of soups, its getting cold!!
I've made a few big batches of asparagus, potato creamy soup, soooo good, and a big batch of seitan, mostly for breaded nuggets, a little for bbq seitan....

yeserday
B-ezekial toast w/ EB
S-tortilla chips
L-veggie/bean soupa
D-banana, asparagus-potato soup, seitan, veggie bean soupa, (little Kea rejected the asparagus kind)

yummm, we're fresh out of aspargus, I may have to get some more for another batch!
Party Time MamaA!!! I think I remeber what that feels like!!!

I just opened her lunch bow, and she didn't eat her brownie. Weird.

WOW, Quintess, that sucks. I don't understand how anyone could possibly feel ok about feeding school kids such nutritionally bankrupt foods. As i shared earlier in this post, all snacks served in my daughter's class have to be gluten free and vegan due to students with serious allergies. The parents organized, presented this to the school and now we take turns providing healthy, simple snacks for the kids. Things like veggie booty, Food Should Taste Good multigrain chips, popcorn, clementines, baby carrots or dried fruit snacks. It's not 100%  easy convincing a school to change the way they've always done things, but having other like minded parents around made it possible.

I think I'm going to have to get involved--I just found out about a parent group called "PIE" (ironic) that influences those kinds of things. It's just insane to serve "nutritionally bankrupt" foods as you say, M! People need some educating. :)

We went to a friend's party today before all the candy stuff. It was great because she told everyone NO sweets! So, today Alethea had:

B: Magical Multigrain Pancakes with maple syrup, orange juice

L: bean burrito, rice, lots of Krazy Kale Chips, sea veggie popcorn, a local fresh-picked apple (YUM!), 2 zucchini mini-muffins (almost everyone at the party made their stuff vegan so we could eat it--yay!), & blue corn chips.
(I was really happy she ate such a solid lunch, because I knew the craziness would follow....)

S: I told her she could have 3 pieces of crappy candy before the candy witch came and took the rest. So she had a jaw breaker, twizzler, and some other such thing. And I think she snuck another piece of candy too! So, four pieces of candy I think...

D: strawberry-soy yogurt smoothie, whole wheat toast, the rest of her pancakes from breakfast.

Tomorrow, her dad will have her & I'm hoping he'll make it a no-sugar day, because today she maxed out!

We had a Halloween party at our house during the afternoon and it was so fun! We watched Ghostbusters, decorated little mini pumpkins and had a pinata. I made hummus, guacamole, black bean dip and ranch dip with a huge veggie tray and a couple of kinds of chips for dipping. I also made caramel apples and spiced cider. We kept it semi healthy...which is good because Mia Belle came home with LOADS of candy. Argh.

B- Two flax waffles w/maple syrup and fruit
L- Hummus, tofurky, spinach and olive wrap, almonds, a banana
S- All the stuff at the party!
D- Two tamales, salsa, black bean and veggie soup

The weather here is amazing. I think we're going to have a picnic today  ;)b

b-banana, cereal w/ rice milk
s-coconut milk yogurt
l-veggie/bean soupa!
s-rasins, frozen bananas, frozen blueberries
d-black olive mushroo pizza, a little more soupa with tortilla chips!

S- breadsticks w/white bean and garlic spread
D- Veggie pot pie, roasted brussel sprouts, caesar salad, pull apart rolls w/garlic butter**
D- apple crisp and homemade ice cream for dessert**

**My grandmother passed away over the weekend (she was very ill and in hospice care, so it wasn't a surprise), so I stayed busy cooking a nice comfort food meal for my extended family while they made the funeral arrangements. I'm seriously lucky to have such a veg friendly family.

Sorry to hear about your loss MammaA.  Its still hard even when its exepected.  I'm sure your comfort food was very appreciated.

Today, like all Mondays, was crazy, Daddy had Kea most of the day while I was at work and school....hes pretty good at giving her okay food, but not great...(example: "she had a ton of pickles, she just wouldn't stop eating them!" me; "how many is a ton?" him; "I don't know...like five," me; "FIVE!" him; "I told you she wouldn't stop," me;" who was giving them to her,  did she just break down the fridge door or beat you up, or what?!!")

so today she had
B-cereal w/ rice milk
S; five pickles!!!!!!
L: veggie soup with I'm sure wayyyy to many tortilla chips
s; coco milk yogurt
D; more soup, Ezekial toast w/ EB
((This is all I've been told about....but I'm sure there may have been an extra pickle in there somewhere.)))

me: cereal w/ rice milk
l; bagel with PB
D: pasta from noodles and Co

finally home and debriefing.......now the week is more mellow until friday, thank goodness.
