Club Vitamix!!!!

Here's a thread to post vitamix recipes, success stories, and even things you don't like about the Vitamix. If you don't have one, feel free to lurk and maybe you'll be convinced to get one.

So far, I my favorite thing I have made is Orange Sorbet. (oranges, sugar, ice). It made so much and I put leftovers in the fridge. In the morning it was liquid and tasted like Orange Julius!

Here's something I don't like:  I made hummus and it was really hard to get it all out from under the blades. Am i missing something here? It seriously took me like 10 minutes and I still didn't get all of it. I just gave up.

The hummus was very  creamy like peanut butter but not like in real Mediterranean Restaurants. My sister said try removing the skin from the chic peas first!

I do not have the dry grinder blades. Do any of you? Is it worth getting?

Tonight its chocolate peanut butter icecream using coconut milk.

Um, does anyone else think nasty, dirty thoughts when they use the food tamper?

well, it depends what I'm using it for

such a handy tool! ;)b ;D

haha.  not when i'm using it so much.  but after i make whatever i made and i lick all the food off the bottom of the tamper.  sometimes it gets messy and i have to shove the whole thing in my mouth.  uh yeah.  thats when i go up to michael being all silly.

What ingredients go into ice cream?  I blend frozen fruit with water and it blends thick.  I usually have to water it down toward the end so I can suck it through a straw.

first i make a nut milk with a handful of raw cashews and water, then i add in the room temp ingredients, peanut butter or chocolate, sugar or agave and blend that with the milk.  then i add in the frozen stuff, either ice cubes or frozen bananas, and blend that quickly so as not to melt it.  the peanut butter ice cream recipe in the cookbook that came along with the vitamix is our favorite.  its awesome.

So, I am getting ready to finally take the plunge and purchase a Vitamix. I have a question though. What kind of Vitamix do you all have? The newest one seems to be the Vitamix Super 5200. However, on Amazon I found a Vitamix Turbo Blend 4500 for under $350! Does anyone have this one? Does it still do all of the wonderful things that the newer models do? Can I make ice cream, smoothies, soups, nut butters and all of that just as well??? It would be nice to save $100!

Well, I have an older model and it works for me just fine.  I have the 5000 model with the liquid and dry containers.

I did pause a while the last time I was in CostCo to watch a demonstration for the new 5200 model.  From what I was told by the representative and from what I could see, there weren't too many differences.  It looked like the containers were shorter, but I can't imagine they actually are smaller (maybe they're wider?).  The lids are also different, they have some sort of latch on the sides but mine doesn't and it works fine.  The rep told me the main differences between my model and the new one are the material the jars are made from and the motor.  Apparently now it is a lot quieter.  I would sure love that since mine could wake the dead, but it's not worth replacing it to me.

As for the 4500 model, I'm just not sure.  My friend has an older model than mine and it is totally different.  Her's is metal and it has a spout at the bottom.  You manually flip a switch to change the direction of the blades and you can actually see sparks under the jar when you flip it.  I personally would never want her model.  I used it at her house once and it was a disasterous mess.  That spout thing collects gunk from whatever you blend in it and it's impossible to clean.  It also doesn't have the same knobs and it didn't seem to work as well.  If that model is the Turbo 4500, I wouldn't recommend it.  You might try to find a picture of it somewhere and see how it looks in comparison to the newer models.

I have the 5200 and its not really quiet...but I haven't heard other models either. I think the biggest difference is that it is made with BPA free plastic and won't leach chemicals into your food (especially for making hot stuffs)

Get one!
I love mine, but not for making hummus.

I also have the 5200, and though I love it, it is absolutely NOT quiet. Maybe quietER if the 5000 is eardrum-busting loud, but mine could also wake the dead... Seriously, when I make my morning smoothies, I feel bad for my downstairs neighbors if they're sleeping because this thing literally rattles my countertop & I can feel the vibrations down to the floor. No joke. I think if that sales rep said this new model is quieter, it's just a gimmick... Certainly not quiet enough to warrant getting a new one. L2A is right in that the biggest difference (I think) is that the new container is BPA-free.

Seems like I should just spring for the 5200 then. I don't need to be drinking chemical smoothies!

I bought mine refurbished from the VitaMix website. It still has the same warranty & is guaranteed by VitaMix; the refurbished models never actually had anything wrong with them, and were either returned (unused) or lightly used by reps at demonstrations. Totally worth it, and saved me a couple hundred dollars!

Oh yay! I didn't even notice they had a refurbished option. They are only $379. That's much better. Thanks Jessacita!

Vanilla Swirl Ice Cream

1 cup soaked almonds
3 TB agave nectar
3 TB vanilla flavoring (glycerin-based vanilla is best, rather than alcohol-based--you can purchase it at frontiercoop.com/"vanilla flavor"
3/4 cup water

1.  Soak almonds minimum of 8 hrs or overnight. (rinse well & drain)
2.  Place almonds in Vitamix with remaining ingredients
3.  Blend until smooth.
4.  Place in pyrex storage bowl & freeze.

I first made this with a "regular" blender & the taste was good, but the texture was grainy.  Wow--now it comes up beautifully smoothy!

The almonds are expensive, but it's a MUSt for my son who can't have dairy!  What a super find!  Also--here's a HEALTHY ice-cream!  Hurray.
The recipe is from the book, "Mother Necessity Gluten Free/Casein Free Ice Cream, Smoothies & Protein Shake Recipes" by Cristin Fergus

Now that I have a Vitamix I may give the book a 2nd look, although for ice-cream my son is happy with vanilla-not wanting other varieties.

Wooh! I ordered my Vitamix and I totally cannot wait for it to arrive. Then I will be an official member of the club! I just want to make green smoothies every day, I think.

I have been looking on ebay for one.
Have found a few that might be a good deal.
Not in a big hurry so I keep looking.
A big investment that you don't want to rush into.

L2A, i read your comment about hummus making. boy are you right! i hate making anything with that constancy. i'm destroying all of my silicone spats trying to get the goodness out!

I first read that as "human" making.

Not vegan.

Exactly. Eating humans? Depends on the context. Blending humans in the Vitamix then eating them? Prob not vegan.

I have destroyed a couple of my silicone spatulas as well, BP. :(

That's just because your humans have a bony consistency!

I just made sorbet with my new Vitamix and it was awesome! I just threw in some frozen strawberries, frozen mangoes, and frozen pineapple with a little water and turned it on. It was delicious.
