Compromising Situation-He had my dog by the throat!

I have a 4 year old Chesapeake bay retriever mix that my boyfriend and I have had since he was 6 weeks old. He is the love of my life :) 'nuff said.

Chesapeakes are very "leary of strangers".

We go to a park ever so often that is awesome. It's right on the intracostal..palm trees..sand...birds...friends..AWESOME!

Today my boyfriend and I went to that park.

Met up with a couple locals we associate with..good times!

Soaked up some sun..shot the shit...and let Jager(our dog) sniff out all the new smells.

We're sitting there and one of the guys (not on purpose) walked up behind us. Jager kinda went towards him with a snarled lip and growled. No worries. I apologized and explained to him that he had scared our dog.."are you cool?"I asked...He said "no big deal".

Jager is a very good judge of character. Most people he likes...some people he is indifferent..and not often he meets someone he doesn't like, You dig?

After ten minutes this person gets up from the picnic table everyone is sitting at and says he's leaving.

I grab Jager and his leash as the dude is leaving and tell jager to relax.

This guy stops and has a staring contest with my dog. BAD MOVE!

This guy says something to the effect of "whats your fucking problem with me?" to my DOG!

and my dog apparently didn't like his tone of voice and got up and barked.

This guy lunges forward and at the same time grabs my dog by the throat and starts yelling at him...i can't remember what he said because I pretty much lost it. All i knew was he had my dogs throat in his hands...

What I'd like to know is what someone else in my position would do...let me know...thanks

Apparently Jager is a good judge of character!  Next time take his advice and leave the company of jerks.  :P  Anyone who feels the need to try and dominate like that has some serious personal issues.  Not that I actually care about this guy's motivations... honestly... I don't want to type what I would have done -I can be a tad explosive.  I'm sure some would suggest discussing it with him, but I don't; I can't imagine why you would want to have any further interaction with him.  >:(
Is there a community bulletin board (online or physically at the park) where you could post an account of the incident?  I don't know that I'd do that, but it might make you feel better.  :-\
Hugs to Jager!

Good riddance to the jerk. You don't need to have anything more to do with that kind.
Love me, love my cats (or dog, in your case).

I never really had much to do with him anyhow...he was just a local that came to hang out with everyone.

I'm a lil embaressed about how I reacted. I'm really not one for violence. Towards animals and people. When he had my dog by the throat with both hands..and had him a foot off the ground..I SNAPPED! I felt a rage I've never felt before.

As he had my dog in his hands..my boyfriend grabbed Jager's leash to try to pull him back..I punched the guy in the side of the face..full on decked him!!!

Chris(my bf)  got control of Jager and I got in between the "asshole" and Jager. I was screaming at him something to the effect of "what is your f-ing problem, don't touch my dog, etc" I can only describe it as pure rage..it was a sound i've never heard from myself  >:( I was LIVID!

The guy tried to attack  Jager again and tried pushing me aside..I full on punched him in the face..

I feel I'm completely justified for doing that.

At that point..my boyfriend had jager, and didn't want to let him go..but he wanted to protect me...

Fortunately another friend grabbed this jerk and pulled him away...I was still screaming. "MY DOG WAS ON A LEASH....YOU SHOULD BE ON A LEASH!"

Anyways...I talked to some people who witnessed it. They said they couldn't believe that this happened. It was so "unreal" and happened so fast.

Apparently  one of the people who saw this go down talked to this dude later and told him he was wrong and tried to explain to him why I reacted the way I did and he didn't understand

and apparently this person said he abuses his dog and tries to dominate him the way he did mine.

All i know is that Jager is my absolute everything. He had my back and I had his. I know violence isn't solved with violence but I think that was an exception.

Was I wrong?

I don't think you were wrong at all. It's one thing to be one of those "macho" guys who think they can train a dog by domination, but holding the dog (or any creature) by the throat is at best abusive, at worst life-threatening. Hell, I would have cheered you for decking the guy.

You are absolutely right. Thanks!

I'd like to think I would have done the same as you, but I'm probably too wimpy.

I was just looking at your pictures the other day and I could tell that Jager was the apple of your eye.  :)

As I was reading this, I was thinking to myself that I would have beat the shit out of this guy....then I read that you did and I was happy.  Good work.  If anyone ever touched my dog - oh man, it would be bad!

I was reading this and thinking it was lucky for the jerk it was you and not me there.  I would have wanted to get behind the jerk and put him in a choke hold to show him what it was like.  I have always had a protective streak, a soft spot for most things furry and then spent 10 yrs training in/teaching self defense under an old marine combat vet.  Whenever we worked on the "serious" stuff, we had major ethics discussions on the necessity of using as little force as possible to control a situation.  I would say you did well.

Pepper spray. 'Nuff said.

(PS-- humans are my least favorite mammal... to any other species reading this post: I'm not with them!... Just FTR.)

omfg! this guys a psycho... your dog obviously vibed that from the get go (which is a sense humans seem to lack, a pure sense, seriously)... you did not overreact! my dogs are like my freaking kids, seriously, if someone tried to strangle my child they sure as hell would have gotten a few punches and pepper spray aimed in their direction... seriously, insanely uncalled for!

hope you and your dog are ok!

All Jager did was growl a couple times, which is dogspeak for, "Dude, I don't like you much, back off." Loser decided to wade in and make it a confrontation. He got one, just not the one he expected.
Maybe he will learn to leave other people's animals alone after this. I for one applaud your punches and I hope you left marks!!  >:(

I no longer have a dog,  unfortunately, but if I did, I'd also have a T-shirt that read: I'M the Alpha bitch in this pack."
I'm glad Jager didn't bite him, but if I'd been there, I would have done it for you. Bit him,  I mean.

You did exactly the right thing. That jerk wouldn't have responded well to reason. He only understands physical force. Brava for punching him. I too hope you left marks on the jerk. Now you just have to avoid him all the time..
