What you do:

1. Wet toothbrush.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Just checking back in.  I went to have my teeth cleaned for the first time in my life (Hello Insurance!!).  The hygenist cringed when she found out I'd never had them cleaned but at the end complimented me on how clean they were.  Almost no tartar.  I asked if the baking soda and firm toothbrush had damaged the enamel at all...nope.  All good.  So, nearly 8 years into this experiment...no tooth damage and very clean teeth.

I've been using this for several years and have had no problem with my tooth enamel, which was pretty thin to start with.  I only use a tiny bit on a wet toothbrush, say 1/4 tsp.  Regular toothpaste often has abrasives in it as well.  If you're uncomfortable with this for the long term, it is entirely possible to keep your teeth clean using only a toothbrush and floss.  Just brush longer with plenty of water-swishing while you're at it.  I got that from a dental hygenist.

I was mentioning this to one of my friends the other day and she told me that I shouldn't use it too often as it is very abrasive and wears the enamel off your teeth. Has anybody had any experience with this?

i use unrefined sea salt And baking soda than put it in a sandwich bag.the mixture was strong in my mouth shich i believe it came from the sea salt .the sea salt made my  gums bleed because it isnt fine like regular salt . the sea salt burn the sides of my mouth, made my sides of my mouth have bumps and made it look shrivaled.my mouth was ok after i rinse my mouth.my teeth kind of hurt too after.im not going to use sea salt or any salt next time.i do prefer homemade tooth paste than commercial toothpaste.

a couple of people asked how to incorporate hebrs into this...i just used an old fashioned mortar and pestle to grind down the dried herbs (or you could be fancy and use an herb grinder!) then just combine everything in a small container and shake it up! i actually used to use a rubbermaid salt/ pepper shaker, and it worked great to dispense the stuff right onto your toothbrush! : )

I have recently become concerned with ingredients in regular toothpaste, which has led me to researching other options. I just tried baking powder with sea salt for the first time last night, and I must say I am very pleased with the results. :) The taste is not that bad and its fun to make. Plus my teeth are already noticeably whiter! And that is something "whitening" toothpaste never did for me. I highly recommend using this over toothpaste.
