Tempeh Tacos
What you need:
1 (8 ounce) package tempeh
oil, as needed
1 (1 ounce) packet taco seasoning (I use Lawry's taco seasoning)
1 1/4 cups water
8 taco shells
salsa, to taste
lettuce, shredded, to taste
onion, diced, to taste
tomato, sliced, to taste
What you do:
1. Grate tempeh with cheese grater. Heat frying pan with oil, and add tempeh. Cook on medium until brown, stirring occasionally.
2. Add taco seasoning and water. Cook gently until thickened.
3. Scoop into taco shells and add toppings.
Tempeh most resembles what we used to fill tacos with in our less conscious days. It is also much easier to digest than textured soy protein which people more commonly use. Find it at health food stores in the frozen section.

SO HOW'D IT GO?
wow! This is my first time cookin tempeh and I loved it. I had my 20 yr old neice and boyfriend for dinner and they loved it too. Even ate more than usual. I had avacodos, tomatoes, lettuse, onions and salsa for taco stuffing with corn tortillas. I used cumin, paprika, garlic powder and black pepper with water rather than the taco seasoning and it was good. I cant wait to tell all my friends about this!! i am a new vegan and I was sad to have to give up mexican food now I know I wont have to. I am so happy!
These weren't too bad. Personally I'm not much of a tempeh fan so I wouldn't say this is a favorite.
However, I didn't detest it either. This is the first tempeh recipe I haven't detested yet. I'll most likely be eating this from time to time. I added nutritonal yeast and chia seeds to it. I topped it with broccoli sprouts and watercress and had a green leafy salad to the side.
Let me tell you all a secret about my years of being a vegan and picking up tips. Tempeh can be grated but you have to steam it first. Steaming changes the structure of the food and makes it accepting of grating. I recommend steaming tempeh for about fifteen minutes and then let it cool. You can pull your steamer basket out of the pot and the tempeh will cool much faster. Then grate it and you'll have no problem.
When I added the water my very first thought is "Oh no... What have I just done to my beautiful tempeh!?" But I just let it cook out and it was alll okay. I made these in easily about 10 minutes including prep. Super fast meal, and I have to say this is the best recipe I've ever had that used tempeh. Bravo.
This was my first tiem cooking with Tempeh and I loved it. When I tried grating the tempeh it just started crumbling so I abandoned the grating and just crumbled it all and it tasted really good. I stuffed with shredded cabbage, salsa, and red sauce for a light fresh taco.
These were so so good. I didn't grate the tempeh, I simply cut it into really small pieces. Also didn't use as much water as the recipe called for (I simply followed the dirctions on the taco seasoning packet). Loaded it up with vegan sour cream, guac, lettuce, vegan cheese and taco sauce. I've been looking or more ways to use Tempeh... this recipe was perfect.
these were really yummy and super quick and easy to make. thanks for the recipe! ;)b
This is delicious. I have eaten tempeh before but never cooked with it and was a little worried. I couldn't have asked for a more successful outcome. It's meaty, flavorful and satisfying. Thanks so much for posting!
THESE WERE AMAZING!!! Thank you! I have had some really tasty black bean tacos over the past few years, but these were terrific! I also did not have a grater and had to crumble them...it did not seem to pose a problem! Thank you for sharing!!! :)>>>
Tempeh is one of the first things I tried as a veggie years ago. I just wanna add for new veggies that may be reading this classic, is that DO grate it. Somehow, it just tastes better than simply crumbeling. Silly but gives it a better absorbancy of those delish seasonings.
Maybe it depends on the size of the grating holes, because I make this all the time and the most recent time, I decided to give grating it a try and it ended up semi-mushy. It still tasted fine, but the texture was real weird.
