ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!

Serves: 1-8

Preparation time: 50 minutes

I only left these in for about 25 minutes, and that was plenty -- which really suprised me b/c I didn't think the topping would solidify at all.  Very tasty, and true to its name, quite gooey.

I disagree, our brownies needed all 40 minutes to bake firmly.  And don't be surprised that the topping is so much liquid, it firms up.  Excellent brownies.

I was really surprised how chewy and moist these were considering they have no shortening or egg.  I made mine without the topping layer just to save calories and they turned out fantastically.  Not too sweet and certainly satisfies the chocolate urge without being too unhealthy.  Try em out!

This was a fun recipe. I had to leave the brownies in the oven for 60 min. They were moist, rich, and went fast.

Can I use rice milk instead of soy?

yummy!  It amazed me how the fudge came out on the bottom..how does it do that?!?!?! SmileySmileySmiley

Amazing! I used low-carb baking mix for the flour. I love how there's no oil or shortening! Thanks for the amazing recipe.

This is more of a pudding cake than brownies, but they are still awesome.

It may have been my oven but these didn't turn out.  I don't mind them being messy, but I found they just didn't taste like brownies.

these were AMAZING! after pouring the fudge onto the batter i was kind of confused..and then when they were finishe'd baking i thought it disappeared. but then i cut into the dish and there it all was. such a good surprise.  pretty messy and not a finger food, but delicious anyway. i can't imagine how amazing these would be with some soy vanilla ice cream.

These brownies are incredibly delicious! I tripled the recipe and used a 9x13 pan, so mine were a bit thick. The gooey-ness is the best part, even though it makes eating them with your fingers kinda hard ;-) Who knew vegan brownies could be this good!?

These were SO GOOD.  The topping sunk to the bottom, I think, it was like pudding covered with brownie.  You definitely need a spoon to eat them.

These brownies are absolutely delicious! My non-vegan flatmates devoured them! Thanks for a great recipe Smiley

These turned out OK, but if I were to name it, it would be Hot Fudge Upside-Down Pudding Cake.  Thats because all the fudge went to the bottom, so I decided to just flip it over and make it an upside-down cake.  And like someone said, it tastes more like chocolate pudding cake than brownies.

Left these in for about 30 minutes, but my oven doesn't work right... think I overcooked them because they are a bit rubbery.  But they taste good!!

Just popped the mix into the oven! I am giving them to one of my FAVORITE teachers for his birthday... I CANT WAIT TO TELL HIM THEY ARE VEGAN AFTER HE TAKES THE FIRST BITE!!!!!!:D

Great recipe!!!! My very non vegan teacher LOVED these!!! He was so happy that I baked them for him, and he deserved them because he is awesome!!! Once again GREAT JOB!!!

Archived comment by: evanchiPaine
Mine came out more like chocolate bread/cake with liquid at the bottom...they were nothing like brownies. I added a peanut butter frosting and served it as cake, which was pretty good but definitely not brownie-like.

I think I kept these in the full 40 mins and maybe then some, but they were absolutely DIVINE.  The secret to these is using very high quality cocoa powder (Ghiradelli rocks!).  I even used fat free soymilk and it still came out beautifully!  Husband and I loved them. The brownie part may have been just a *little* salty, but not noticeable with the surprisingly wonderful sauce on the bottom. Maybe omitting the salt or a little baking powder next time, and adding a tad more vanilla.  I had only Hains Organic Brown Sugar on hand, and that worked fine for both parts of the recipe. Also plain All-Purpose flour is all I had, and that worked pretty nicely, too!  Definitely will make these again. And again. And again!

The brownies are 25 minutes into their baking time and I just sampled a spoonful: delicious. I used a fair trade raw cane sugar, which lends a really nice flavour to the brownies. They are still pretty saucy on the bottom; I can't wait to see how they turn out in another 15 minutes. I'll keep you posted.

I baked this the full 40 minutes and it came out great. I agree that the texture is more that of a pudding cake than a brownie. I had a fluffy chocolate cake smothered in a thick, rich chocolate sauce. This would be so good with vegan whipped topping or soy ice cream MMMM... Both my partner and his friend loved it! I love how it came out perfect the first time!

ok YUM! altho I would recommend *not* using dark cocoa powder. mine looked burned to a crisp but I tried them anyway (I *really* wanted brownies hehe) and they were sooooper good!  I did make a few substitutions: 1/2 cup oat flour, 1/4 cup barley flour and 1/4 cup wheat flour for the flour and I used apple butter instead of apple sauce because we had none. I think next time I will also try and use espresso for the hot water Smiley

i just baked these brownies, and i used molasses in place of the raw sugar. the brownies were HORRIBLE. i don't know what went wrong. was it the substitution of the sugar for the molasses? the brownies were chewy, but they weren't sweet, and they were terribly dense plus the top was burnt. the brownies were also rather bitter. argh. can someone tell me what could possibly have gone wrong? cus judging by the good reviews, i really want to make this recipe work.

vegal, you probably should have kept with the brown sugar. This mixed with the water and cocoa turns to a gooey fudge on the bottom of the brownies when cooked, and because it starts out on top, as it soaks through it makes the brownies moist. Also, I never have applesauce and always subsitute it with vegetable oil which works really well. We make these brownies alot, and always seem to turn out amazing. Good luck on your next try.

This didn't really thrill me.  It was better warm out of the oven, rather than the following day.  It's probably not likely that I'll be making this one again.  Honestly, I wish I hadn't wasted my cocoa and good quality natural sugars on this.

These were good :) . I used white flour because I didn't have any whole wheat pastry. Looking at the other reviews, I was careful on the cooking time - thirty minutes seemed to do it, but 25 probably would have been better. Have to be careful on these brownies because after the sugar/water/cocoa mix soaks through, there's still a little sugar/water residue on top that easily burns. Next time I might add more cocoa powder, 'cause I like super chocolatey brownies. These were more cake-like.

I'm enjoying my first piece of brownie right now. And let me tell you...FREAKIN'  YUMMY YUM YUM!  Cheesy They did bake up cake-like with the goo at the bottom, but that just makes these brownies worthy of being eaten with a fork.  Wink I just flipped the brownie over so the goo was on top. As far as changes the recipe goes, I used unbleached all-purpose white flour and Ghirardelli cocoa. ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIC! Cheesy

This looks great.  I have also tried using sweet potato puree to make the brownies gooey.  It works pretty well!

I don't really understand..I pretty much followed the recipe exactly...but these were not good! It did take about 40 minutes for them to be not soooo gooey..so they were still a little gooey (which is fine). But, they did not taste good! (not sweet enough?) I don't know what the problem was..but my husband and I did not like these. I'll probably throw them out  Sad

I followed the recipe to a T, and they're amazing!! It's crazy, how the sauce goes to the bottom. These are spoon/bowl kinda brownies. Love it, wonderfully easy recipe!

I was nervous, because I used very coarse w.w. flour and sucanat instead of most of the brown sugar ( my brown sugar had solidified and is in a glass jar ), but it's tasty! I think I added a little more cocoa than the recipe called for, but it's not bitter. Yum.

This recipe seems to have  a lot of mixed reviews.  My kids whipped this up last night with a little help from me.....
One thought it was lick the plate delicious and the other hated it!  I personally thought it was pretty good and will definitely be making it again with some modifications to suit my own personal taste.

The fudge part was good and I loved how it turned out on the bottom!  However, I could really taste the brown sugar.  Next time I think I will try regular sugar instead.

The brownie part was very cakey.  Next time I will try more cocoa powder and maybe half the baking powder.

Overall, it is good recipe and worth trying.

I really liked the texture of these no-fat brownies and the gooey layer.  I tinkered with the recipe and decided to make brownie muffins.  Next time I will reduce the topping amount and increase the cocoa for the main brownie layer.

I wasn't incredibly fond of this recipe. I did 'replace' some of the molasses into cane sugar for brown, and that had a bit to do with it. I definitely reccomend that the fudge isn't extracted from the recipe though. I warm this up with a spot of peanut butter and it does taste great.
