Smoky Tofu and Red Bean Burgers

What you need:

1 (14 ounce) can red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
7 ounces firm tofu, squeezed of excess water and crumbled
1 carrot, grated
1/2 onion, chopped finely
2 cloves garlic, minced
handful fresh parsley, chopped
1/2 cup whole grain breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons flour
1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
1 teaspoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon all purpose seasoning
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
salt and pepper, to taste

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F, and grease baking sheet. Mash beans in a bowl and add the crumbled tofu.
2. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine. I like to use a pastry cutter or fork to help chop and smoosh the mixture which will make it form into patties easier.
3. You may have a taste in order to adjust seasonings. Shape into patties and place on prepared baking sheet. Bake for 25-30 minutes (flipping halfway) or until browned and crispy.
Serve on hamburger buns with grilled onions, lettuce and tomato.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

kmouse, these sound great, as all your food does!  What is on top of them in the 2nd pic?  Looks really good and creamy.

I have to review this recipe again--I make it all the time, exactly as the recipe is.  When I know I have a busy week coming up, I make a double batch of this and just leave it in the fridge in a bowl. When I need a quick dinner I scoop out enough to make a patty, make just how many I need, bake in the toaster oven, and voila! Dinner in the time it makes to bake them. I am looking to freeze them, too--that's the next step!

I haven't had much luck with vegan burgers in the past, so I'm always hesitant to try new recipes. However, this recipe looked really yummy, and I thought that perhaps with the tofu it would stick together. These didn't really stay together--they were pretty crumbly, but dear god it was delicious!!!!! I doubled the amount of liquid smoke, but other than that I followed this recipe to the T (since I'm not very confident in burgers). I baked 35 or so minutes, until the outside was crispy. We topped with mozzarella tofutti slices and avocados, and they were awesome! My boyfriend is in love...with these burgers. If anyone can get them to stay together, I'll be your best friend.

Yay! Glad your boyfriend loved them! To get the burgers to stick better, just add more flour and breadcrumbs.

I wanted to add that these burgers stay together much better the next day when reheated in the toasted oven. Next time we have these, I think I am going to prepare them the night before, then reheat the night we're eating them. If it's possible, they might even be more delicious the next day too! Love this recipe.

These have the most wonderful taste! I hadn't invested in any liquid smoke before this and now I'm wishing I had done so a long time ago! I only had a small can of beans, so the tofu/bean ratio was pretty much 50/50, although my (now) bean-burger-fan bf said he didn't even know there was tofu in them ^^ I had no mixed spices so I threw in some chili powder, extra paprika, and some vigorous dashes of hot sauce. YUM! Thank you for this recipe  ;)b

These were really yummy  :)>>>!  My husband loved them, too.  I also topped them with grilled onions, and I added some Vegan mayo & cheese.  Mine didn't stick together al that well...but they tasted great, so who cares  :P

yummm, so good! I added a pit of chili powder and cayenne pepper instead of all purpose seasoning and liquid smoke. They held together really well, too!

These were great.  I had no carrots or liquid smoke but made them anyway.  I fried mine and topped them with carmelized onions and hot sauce.  They held together pretty well.  I think they might benefit from some curry powder, I think I will try that next time.I froze the extra mixture so we'll see how it holds up frozen.  Overall a really great recipe that makes a nice, "beefy" burger! :)
