Smokey Maple Hickory Fake Bacon

What you need:

3 tablespoons pure maple syrup
pinch sea salt
3 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari (but not Bragg's)
1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons liquid smoke hickory flavor
1 pound extra firm tofu, cut into thin bacony lengths
2 tablespoons light frying oil (canola, peanut or safflower)
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast flakes (I use Red Star Torula)

What you do:

1. Mix the maple syrup, salt, soy sauce, liquid smoke and vegan Worcestershire sauce. Place tofu strips in a shallow pan and marinate in the mixture for 5-10 minutes.
2. Remove strips and reserve marinade. Fry tofu strips in hot oil over medium heat until they are crispy on the outside, 5-10 minutes each side. Make sure they are somewhat crispy though, you don't want them mushy.
3. When crisp, pour the remaining marinade into the pan and toss with marinade, remove from pan, sprinkle with nutritional yeast and serve.
Best on BLTs. You can also slow bake the marinated tofu, basting it as you go, but frying is much faster and gives a more authentic taste. Totally satisfies my cravings for salty/fatty/sweet/crispy/savory foods.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

The recipe with the maple was very nice and I had tried this in my home. Smokey maple tastes very nice and felt very energetic. However, I added some pepper powder with the maple for extra taste, and it tastes was superb.windows xp support

I made these for breakfast this morning and man they are good! I was very surprised at just how much they tasted like bacon.
I made one batch then ended up making another since I had tofu left over. Only thing I did differently on the second batch is use dark corn syrup and molasses instead of maple syrup ( I ran out). They were just as good as the first batch.
I used olive oil and fried in a cast iron pan.....yummy!! My dogs were having fits trying to get a morsel, which they did :)

Thank you for the recipe. ;)b

My tempeh-hating family loved it! Every one of 'em! DH, 8 year old, and 1 year old.
I marinated it for a few hours, then started frying it in what I think was too much oil. So, to crisp it up, I took it out of the too oily pan and fried it in the cast iron with only a tiny bit of oil. That seemed to help dry it out and crisp it up. At the very end, I poured maple syrup into the pan and let it bubble and fry in just that. IT was so good! I really don't think it tasted like bacon, but yummy none-the-less.

The flavor & taste was very good. Even my omni husband said it smelled like bacon. But I couldn't get it crispy. It started turning brown/black before crisping up. Does anyone have any tips for this? Maybe I was frying them too hot? SHould I try flouring before frying?

Made this for breakfast, I used tempeh instead. I didn't measure any of the ingredients, just winged it based on sight, marinated for 30 mins then fried. These were very tasty. I will add extra maple syrup next time, they taste really good. Thanks for the recipe

Why is Bragg's not recommened in here?  To me it tastes exactly like what I remember soy sauce to be.
