Oat Steaks

What you need: 

1 Cup Rolled Oats (Organic if possible)
1 Cup Water
1/2 Cup Soy Milk
1/2 Cup chopped herbs (parsley, sage, thyme etc)
Stock powder (the one you like, to taste)

What you do: 

Put oats, water and soy milk in a pan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5mins. Add herbs and stock powder, stirring every now and then to prevent sticking.
Grease a loaf pan with olive oil. When the oats are soft and creamy pour into the loaf tin. Allow the oats to cool and set (this can be done the day before and stored in the fridge.
Remove the oatcake from the loaf tin and slice into steaks. Heat a little olive oil in a heavy skillet and fry the oat steaks on both sides till golden brown.
This is high fiber, high energy winter comfort food that is perfect with a rich tomato sauce and grilled mushrooms. In summer you can BBQ it and serve with salad and a smoky corn and chili salsa (for summer change the herbs to coriander and basil adding them just before you pour the oats into the loaf tin)

To make your "steaks" hang together better, add a few more oats or less water so the cooked mixture is stickier and thicker. I recommend chilling it in the fridge overnight, too, maybe even weighted to compact it down. It gives the mix time to set up firmly.

These turned out to be pretty good!  I followed some other reviewers' suggestions/comments and used an onion soup mix and a little wheat gluten to help it stay together.  One of my steaks fell apart while frying it, but I think I sliced it too thin.  It makes a cheap, easy, and pretty tasty burger.  In the future I might experiment with other flavorings and maybe even add in some grated veggies.

I like this... it's not really helping me not eat oatmeal for breakfast lunch and supper though...

I only had instant oats, which was no good for texture, but I added onion soup mix, and it was fantastic. My mom liked it too.

Next time I might add a little gluten just to make it hold together a little bit better.

I cannot believe how great these taste! My husband was shocked when I told him it was simply seasoned and browned oatmeal! I made vegan gravy to go with them.  :D

Oops. Forgot to review until now. I made these with just yeast extract (Marmite-type thing) and water and I think I added a bit much water cos they were a bit soggy in the middle, but the next day they'd dried out a bit. Either way, they were very very nice - quick, easy, and cheap (cos I live in England, getting gluten flour is a pain and when I make seitan I have to do it from scratch - with bread flour). So these are a lovely, quick alternative with a roast dinner. 2ndbase's idea of adding stuff in is excellent, and I will do that too next time. Thanks for the great recipe!
Will be making again - very soon!

this does look like a great base recipe. i'd probably play around with the ingredients a little bit and add some shredded carrots and sun dried tomatoes, maybe some olives and bell pepper.

This sounds scrummy! And I happen to have 1/2 a bag of oats that need eating. In the absence of a horse, these steaks look like the best option! Well, when I've finished my uni assignment, anyway!
