Microwave Sticky Tofu Ribs

What you need: 

1 pound firm tofu
1/2 cup favorite BBQ sauce
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup maple syrup (cheap versions work, too)
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
nonstick cooking spray or some margarine

What you do: 

Find the biggest plate or platter that will fit in your microwave, and spray it with nonstick cooking spray or grease it with vegan margarine.
Use frozen and defrosted tofu to get the best texture. Cut it into 1/4 inch slabs and squeeze all the moisture out of it between two plates. In a bowl, whisk together the BBQ sauce, orange juice, vegan maple syrup and pepper.
Pour half of the sauce mixture onto the greased plate and then arrange the tofu slices on it to get the least amount of overlapping pieces. Pour the rest of the sauce on the top and pop into a microwave.
Microwave on high for 10 minutes. Sauce may splatter on the inside of the microwave. After 10 minutes, let the Tofu rest for 5 minutes, and check the texture. It should be hard around the edges and very firm in the middle. If so, dig in. It tastes even better when cold. If not, microwave in 3 minute increments until desired consistency.
This tofu also tastes great on a charcoal BBQ, but make sure the grill is greased to avoid sticking.
Even meat eaters enjoy this one because the texture is so close to the real thing. My Dog is crazy for it. Also tastes great stuffed into a sandwich with pickles and extra sauce and some vegan coleslaw on the side.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Thanks for this.  I already had my oven going for other dishes at a higher temp than I like for baked tofu.  Plus I don't always feel like the baking/flipping/time/heat of baked tofu.

Your tofu looks like it's cubed and not sliced.  Is that true?  My tofu didn't get chewy but rather stayed soft.  Also not much flavor cooked into the tofu.  I think next time I would marinade and cook longer.

Y'all know that if you cover your dishes in the microwave, all the splatter hits the cover instead.  Break out those casserole dishes and use them in the microwave.

Ran into some problems with this recipe, mainly concerning the fact that i only had paper plates and a very weak and dying microwave.  Not bad though after all the hassle and mess.  Tasted like BBQ tofu.  Very nice texture.

These were pretty awful. The only thing I did that differed from the recipe was omit black pepper (because I had none) and they came out way too soft no matter how much extra time I gave it in the microwave or let it sit. The amount of orange called for was way too much and overpowered everything else. I've spent half an hour trying to save this dish but it can't be salvaged. Two questions: How did this get a five star rating from anyone? How in the world did you make it look so deceptively good in the picture?
It MIGHT turn out alright if extra firm tofu was used instead of just firm and a ton of other changes were made, but there are too many other great veg BBQ recipes to make me want to give this another try.

I loved these.  Of course, bbq + tofu can't = bad.  I used my favorite bbq sauce plus a little soy sauce.  I really enjoyed the orange juice flavor.  It gave the ribs a slightly Asian flavor which worked well since I paired it up with Ginger-Soy Sauce Potatoes. http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=20766.0

Overall, this was quick and easy.  I don't have an aversion to microwaves, so this makes a quick and super easy meal when I don't feel like crankin on the oven.

i haven't made these yet but plan to, so i'll say how they've turned out once i do.
just thought that i'd mention that if you don't have a cover it and it splatters all over the microwave it is alot easier to clean off if you put boil watter in the microwave first. doesn't really matter how long, just until it comes off easier.

I was hesitant about trying this, but I'm glad I did.
It didn't seem like just coating the tofu with the bbq sauce mixture would flavor it well enough... but surprisingly, it did!  There was no need to let it sit for a long time before popping into the microwave.

I also never had bbq sauce with orange juice in it... but that turned out being yummy. :-)

I had a half a block of tofu left over from another recipe, so I used that. (halved the recipe)

It sure turned out well!

These were definitely really good.  Just make sure you have enough sauce left over because it's so much better with the sauce!

I adore these!  My alterations are two fold...I use Jamaica
Jerk Seasoning in the sauce and to prevent the micro mess use
a baking dish.  this cuts down on the splatter and keeps the
sauce on the strips. 

When the strips are done, put them in another container, scrap
the excess sauce from the side of the baking dish, then put it
into soap water...clean up is easy.
