I Can't Believe It's Vegan Gravy!

What you need:

1 vegetable bullion cube
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
few good dashes garlic powder
2 heaped tablespoons nutritional yeast
few good dashes soy sauce
1/2 teaspoon mustard
1/4-1/2 cup flour, as needed (I use brown rice flour)
1 tablespoon vegan butter
sea salt and pepper, to taste

What you do:

1. Combine all ingredients in pot, and bring to boil.
2. Cook on medium low heat until done.
I sometimes like to add a little pinch of sage as well. This goes great over everything! My Dad (avid meat eater) says that this gravy is delicious!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This is one of my favorite gravy's-it's simple, quick, and good.  As other reviewers mentioned, it's way easier if you melt the EB in the pan and then stir in the flour, and THEN add all the other ingredients.  I think it's better with just a teaspoon or two of NY because if you add the full amount it tends to take like cheeze sauce and not gravy.

this was good and quick, i used dijon mustard, less EB, and only 1/4 of flour.. it was plenty and thickened up fine.  i shoulda mixed the flour with some water to make a paste first cus even when i added it in a sprinkle at a time it still had tons of little lumps.  i also added more onion and garlic powders and it was really good with my mashed potatoes, 'meat'loaf and corn.

I made this recipe (with a few modifications) last night and my wonderful man said "this is the best gravy I've had since giving up meat".  That's a huge compliment coming from my 'very picky, vegan for the last 5 years guy'.  Like a few others, I did slightly modify the recipe.  I made it more like my Grandmama used to by sauteing a few onions with all of the seasonings in olive oil & butter then browning the flower a bit before adding the water & soy sauce.  Oh...I also cut the nut. yeast by half (personal tastes).  All I can say is...Thanks Girl.  This is a great recipe.

I thought this was delicious! I made it last night and poured it on mashed potatoes, a vegan Boca patty, and some buttered bread.

I don't know if this happened to anyone else, but just a heads up: I had combined everything into the pan, and I let it sit over the heat without stirring. I was wondering why mine wasn't thickening, but then I finally started to stir with a whisk and there were a lot of clumps in the bottom. It had started to thicken from the bottom. This might be a no-brainer, but I just wanted to say, don't be alarmed if it looks all soupy even though its been sitting on the burner for a little while. Just give it a stir.

I used Kal brand nutritional yeast flakes for those who've had negative experiences with yeast flakes (I have), and this gravy came out fantastic! I think the yeast flakes definitely lend to the gravy taste in this one.

I made this with the minimum amount of flour recommended and it came out perfect .  This will now be my staple recipe for gravy. I actually prefer this  to ANY other gravy I have had thus far. Even my super finicky 13 year old loved it! Thanks :D

Yummy, yummy, yummy! For some reason my boyfriend is the only one who can make it taste really good...I always add too much of something. This recipe is really great and I am so glad we can use this instead of buying the tofutti brand (which I don't care for at all). All our omni friends and family can't tell the difference...as long as I'm not the one making it.  :) Thanks for the great cruelty free recipe!

Mine came out pretty tasteless so I added a lot of Spike seasoning.  The author suggested rice flour so I tried that but didnt like how it came out. The texture was like Cream of Wheat. Next time I"ll use regular wheat flour.

So simple and tasty.  Omitted mustard and it was fine.  Took less than 5 minutes from start to finish.

Can the two cups of water and the bullion be substituted for just two cups of veggie broth? I intend to add mushrooms and caramelized onions, and use it with the Tofurky recipe for Thanksgiving.
