French Dip

What you need:

little loaf of crusty vegan bread halved or vegan French bread halved
1 portobello mushroom
2 tablespoons olive oil (or whatever you prefer)
a squirt of Braggs liquid aminos or soy sauce
1 tablespoon "Better Than Bouillon" veggie broth (or whichever brand you like)
1/4 onion sliced (not minced)
soy vegan cheese (optional)
2 cups water

What you do:

Simmer 2 cups water and put in the bouillon. Turn to low.
Meanwhile slice portobello very thin into slices like sandwich meat. Save and mince the stem of the shroom then put it into the broth that is simmering.
Heat pan with oil to medium heat and add onion. Let fry for about 1 minute and then add mushroom slices. Squirt Braggs evenly covering all slices and onion then turn them over. Let the mixture sizzle for about 1 more minute or until it caramelizes.
Turn on oven broiler to about 400 degrees.
Cut "cheese" and put it on one side of halved bread and put the mushrooms and onions on the other side.
Put under the broiler for 1-2 minutes or until sandwich is toasty and yummy.
Strain shroom stems out of broth and serve the broth in a bowl on the side. Dip your sandwich in and munch.

Mmmm, this is a good one. I too missed French Dip sandwiches and this totally satisies the craving! The dipping juice was kind of bland, not sure what it needs, but man, this is a great recipe!

Maybe more bullion or some garlic or a couple squirts of Bragg's?

OMG this is soooo freaking good! Since going vegetarian, I have MISSED french dips and was worried I wouldn't be able to replace it! Thankfully, this recipe made it to where I can eat it AND not feel guilty or sick! Thank you for sharing this!!! :)

Thanks!!! I was beginning to think that no one would try it. I "borrowed" the recipe from my fave vegan restaurant in Seattle called "Cafe Flora". Glad you love it!

my mom bought a whole bunch of baby bella mushrooms, and i didnt feel like stuffing them, so i made this and it was REALLY REALLY delicious.
i added a little bit (like a tiny splash) of liquid smoke and a sprinkle of garlic powder to the mushrooms and onions and used follow your heart mozzarella on the sandwich.
mmm. :)
i though that two cups of the broth would be WAAAY too much for just one sandwich, so i made only one cup, but theres still a lot left over. i think next time ill do a quarter or half cup.
overall awesome recipe!
