What you need:

4 cups flour

1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

3/4 cup shortening or vegan butter

1 tablespoon maple syrup

2 cups water

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease a cookie sheet. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt in a big bowl.

2. Cut in the shortening and syrup until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Make a well in the center and add the water. Mix all together.

3. Turn out of bowl and knead for about 3 minutes. Pat out onto prepared cookie sheet into an oblong shape about 3/4" thick, and prick all over with fork.

4. Bake about 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown and a bit puffy.

Source of recipe: Another (slightly modified) Native American/First Peoples recipe from my family! The only modification I have made is to sub vegetable shortening for the traditional lard/grease.  You can use any flour, but if you use something other than wheat you may have to play with the amount of fat.

This should be crumbly, and a bit heavy.  Slather with jam, or eat with stew!  Made to go with Nas8b8n M8wigisoak.
