Delicious Pakistani Dhal

What you need:

3 cups water or vegetable stock
1 cup dry red lentils
4 to 5 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, diced
1/2 medium-sized ginger root, peeled and chopped
2 to 3 cloves garlic, diced or crushed
2 teaspoons curry powder
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
salt and pepper, to taste
1/2 (14 ounce) can chopped tomatoes

What you do:

1. Heat water or stock in pot until boiling. Add lentils and boil for one minute. Reduce heat to a simmer. Simmer lentils until they resemble a thick paste.
2. While lentils are simmering, heat oil in frying pan. Add onion, ginger, and garlic; fry until soft. Add curry, coriander, cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper; saute for 2 to 3 minutes.
3. Add tomatoes; saute for another 3 to 5 minutes. Add fried spice mixture into lentil paste, stir and cook an additional 15 to 20 minutes.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Woooo.  This recipe is great and was super easy to make.  I will probably use a veggie broth next time for extra flavour.  This will definitely be a staple in my house!  :)>>>

Cooking oil?Canola oil is good for the Omega3s, but...

Have you ever tried to use Peanut butter instead of Oil??! You would be surprised! You can NOT taste it when you add spices!!!! Honest!! It makes the protein count higher for vegetarians! yippee! I'm really excited about this!! You have GOT to try Peanut butter instead of OIL on your lentils!!! Lentils have a slight nutty taste, and this enhances the normal flavor! I promise! My non-Vegetarian husband likes it!

Yummmmmmmmmm. I used a lot of ginger...and lots of spices (actually became spicy with just curry-Madras), and I added 4 yellow squash, and used basil crushed tomatoes, and green onion. Fabulous!  :)>>>

I made this recipe for lunch today.  I left out the chili powder and added some frozen corn but otherwise followed the recipe exactly.  It was so delicious.  Quick, easy and so, so good! :)>>>

Great basic recipe! I like my Indian food spicy though, so I ended up adding a little premade curry paste to it. Mext time I'll try using a little more of each spice fromt he beginning.

I made this last night, and it was wonderful. I used fresh tomatoes instead of canned. I also tossed in a bit of coconut milk. I loved loved loved it!

I thought the curry overpowered all the other flavors and it really wasn't worth the time. Maybe I used a gross curry powder?

This is an easy and rewarding recipe.  I've been making it near weekly since September.  It helps that I found a kick-ass curry powder from a local Asian food market.  I always add a few handfuls of well washed baby spinach as I take it off of the stove.  Lately I've been adding some diced white turnip when I add the lentils.  I figure it's more of a 'meal-in-a-bowl' this way.  Give it a try.  Delicious!

I never liked dhal, but I LOVE this one. I've made it many many times and will make it many more times to come.  I eat mine with pappadams.
