Death by Apple Pie

What you need:

Crust:
2/3 cup vegetable shortening
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup boiling water
1 1/2 cups flour Filling:
6 apples, thinly sliced/diced (I use Granny Smith)
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
pinch salt Topping:
1/3 cup vegan margarine
1/2 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. For crust, cream the shortening with the salt. Add boiling water and mix. Add flour. Press crust into pie plate.
2. For filling, Fill crust with apples. In a bowl, mix together sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Sprinkle on top of apples.
3. For topping, cream together flour, sugar, and margarine. Spoon mixture on top of pie.
4. Bake for 10 minutes. Reduce to 350 degrees F and bake for another 30 minutes. Enjoy!
I like to bake this in a square casserole dish instead of a pie dish. If you want to use a premade crust, it works equally as well as the homemade one. However, the homemade crust is so easy to make, you may as well. I prefer to use granny smith apples for their tart, crisp taste. They're very good baking apples. For this recipe, I halve the sugar, using 1/4 brown sugar and 1/4 white for the filling and the topping. You may also add a smidge of cinnamon to the topping if you like.

AMAZING!
I was so surprised how easy it was to make a delicious apple pie!
I used a pre-made pie crust cuz I'm lazy, so I only needed 3 apples.  I used 1 Fugi and 2 Granny Smith.  I added some cinnamon and oats to the topping.....and while it didn't come out in nice pie slice shapes cuz it was fairly soggy, it was awesome!
Thanks so much!

I think this pie is absolutely fantastic! I made this for my in-laws and served it as the main dessert. My boyfriends mom said that the pie crust was light, flaky and delish. This means a lot coming from an avid pie baker! I really cut back on the sugar, as I usually do, and squeezed a small amount of lemon on the apples, to prevent them from browning. The topping is so spectacular! I will use this pie recipe as my base, changing the fruit filling. 5 STARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you  :)>>>

No wonder people say "easy as pie."
'twas super easy!  ;)b

I agree with others to cut back on the sugar.
I used 2 jumbo apples (not vegan, I know...) and that barely fit a 9-inch pan.
This pie is my sustenance for the week... :-X

Yum! I did/forgot to add a few things that kept this pie from being PERFECT, but it's still very tasty. I don't buy shortening, so I made an oil based pie crust, and forgot to add salt. So, the crust needs something..I cut back on the sugar a lot..and didn't really measure anything, so mine could probably use a bit more sugar (I used all brown). I added a bit of nutmeg to the topping. I also didn't read the reviews..and thought about adding oatmeal to the top AFTER it had been in the oven for a few minutes, so I added it a little late, and added some extra EB to the top. I used 4-5 apples-2 Granny smith, and some Macintosh. I baked mine in a square dish.

is there anything I could use in place of shortening? I know of spelt flour, pre-made crusts that don't use shortening. any ideas?

You could use coconut oil. Also, Bryanna Clark Grogan has a really good and simple oil pastry crust, there is even a whole grain option. It is on her site.

A good recipe, but just too sugary for me. Next time I'll also let the apples sit for a bit so the some of the juice runs out so that when you bake it you don't have a pile of juice at the bottom of your pie.

Cutething,

Your recipes are good, girl!  I loved this.  Next time I will use less sweet apples, I used red....I thinkg Granny Smith would be awesome.

I added oatmeal to the topping as others had mentioned.  Tasty!

Important note! If you're using sweet apples, (e.g. not the tart granny smiths), you can easily cut out a good portion of sugar. If you like your pies tart, you can use the granny smiths AND cut the sugar, and you'll still love this recipe. I like tart apples, but most people like super sweet pies, hence compromises.

Thanks for all the rave reviews! This pie gets gobbled up by my roommates, which is awesome, because I would be a good deal heftier if I had this pie all to my self every time I made it.
