Chocolate Frosting

What you need:

1 cup sugar
6 tablespoons corn starch
4 tablespoons cocoa
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup water
2 tablespoons oil
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

What you do:

1. Mix sugar, cornstarch, salt, and cocoa in a medium sauce pan. Whisk in the water.
2. Heat over medium until it gets thick and starts to boil. Boil for 1-2 minutes. (Make sure you don't boil too long, or it will set like taffy.)
3. Remove from heat and stir in oil and vanilla. Cool and spread on cooled cake. Enjoy!

mmm, tasty. I loved this and I can imagine if you're a dark chocolate lover you'll love it more than I do.

Holy fork.
This was so good. And so easy.
Almost too easy.

Thanks for a great recipe! Really cured my...er...chocolate cravings.
This is great both on the cake and eaten with a spoon (like pudding)!  :)>>>

I used arrowroot in mine because I was out of corn starch and I think that is where my mistakes began. I began to get impatient when it wouldn't start boiling over medium heat so I upped the heat and looked away briefly and it began to get really thicken all of a sudden. I quickly took it off the heat, but I feel I was too late. By then it was already incredibly thick and a gooey texture that was not very pleasant. I tried adding a little soy milk as someone suggested, but I don't think that helped much. I'll try a few other things in hopes of reviving it, but I may have ruined it. However, I would consider trying again after reading everyone's such positive reviews.

As I read this I realized that mine never really comes to an actual boil, so I just keep stirring frequently until it gets very thick. Takes a few minutes at least, but it always gets there.

haha, I too have tried and failed at making it "vanilla". I actually did  try to add some food coloring to the "crystal gravy".... Let's just say it didn't help. It was still translucent, just colored translucent. Weirded me out big time.

And one more thing....DO NOT use this as a vanilla frosting recipe!! I left out the cocoa and added a splash of lemon juice. That seemed harmless, but what I got was a pot of stuff that tasted good, but looks a lot like rubber cement. Anyone remember those SNL comercials for Crystal Gravy?? Yeah--think Crystal Frosting. Ewwww. Any hints on why it turned from white to translucent at the last minute??

ROFL I remember crystal gravy!! What if you used some natural food coloring? And maybe cut back a bit on the thickener since the cocoa powder gives the whole recipe more bulk you'll need it to be a little less thick. This post has actually piqued my interest. I have a ton of different icing colors so I think I'll get in the kitchen to do a little experimenting.

Delicious and works well with the "easy vegan chocolate cake" that is also on this site.

Mine did turn out a bit pudding-like, but after cooling it in the fridge, it turned out fine.

This is A mazing!!!!!!! The first time I didn't let it boil quite enough so it was more like a chocolate glaze but still tasted great. The second time I really paid attention to when it started getting thick in the bottom of the saucepan. Oh this is so good! I put almond slivers and coconut flakes on it!! True heaven!!!!!!!!!!!

SO I severely messed up thinking i had cornstarch but only having corn meal! So instead I used a little bit more than 6 Tablespoons of flour and it came out so lumpy, I decided I would save it by taking it off the heat and putting into a mixing bowl with almond milk and a bunch of confectioners sugar, it was then it turned out awesome but I can't say I followed the recipe! BUT go look at my photo, such a lovely shine, and it was tasty!
