SO HOW'D IT GO?

I wonder if the recipe's author was using self rising flour?  If not I would try adding a bit of baking soda.

I don't know what turbinado sugar is

Turbinado sugar is made by crushing freshly cut sugar cane, a squeezing out the juice and spinning it in a turbine.  It's characteristics are large sparkly golden crystals and it is rich in molasses, vitamins and minerals, which gives it a distinctive flavor.  Basically it's just fancy flavorful somewhat good for you sugar  ;)

I'm sure subbing any other type of crystalline sugar would work just as well for this recipe.
