Chana Masala

What you need:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 medium onion, chopped
1 large clove garlic, minced
1 tablespoon curry
1 tablespoon tomato paste (I used ketchup)
1 (15 ounce) can chickpeas, drained, reserving 3 tablespoons liquid
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
fresh black pepper, to taste
crushed red pepper, optional, to taste
1 tablespoon margarine

What you do:

1. Heat oil on medium high heat. Fry onions until slightly browned. Reduce heat to medium. Add garlic, curry, and paste.
2. Stir and simmer about 2 minutes. Add chickpeas, reserved liquid, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper. Simmer 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Add red pepper to taste. Add margarine, stirring through to melt it. Stir and simmer for 5 minutes more or until peas are softened and dish is hot. Serve over rice.'

SO HOW'D IT GO?

Chana masala is my absolute favorite thing to order at Indian restaurants, so I was excited to try out this recipe instead of just buying a microwavable Tasty Bite. It was amazing!! Not exactly like getting it at the restaurant, but really delicious. Like others, I made some changes by adding cocunut milk (so good), coriander, cardamon, cumin, and another teaspoon of tomato paste. Next time I will add some water to make the sauce a bit saucier.

I'd say this recipe makes enough for two servings, so I will definitely double it when I make it for my family-- which I plan to do very soon!

This recipe will definitely be added to my regular cooking rotation  ;)b

yummy! I doubled the paste, added coriander, turmeric, and ginger, a little hungarian paprika, coconut milk, lots of spinach, and had it with some red bell peppers and broccoli. mmz.

This was very good. It made about 3 servings for me. I used quinoa instead of rice and also used rice milk instead of the suggested soy milk as a replacement for the margerine. And I also add in a can of diced tomatoes. It turned out delicious, Ive had it for dinner 2 nights in a row now, and tonight will make 3.

A+ This was really good. I doubled all the spices and I think that helped. I used soy milk instead of margarine and it came out fine. I'll definitely be making this again.

This is really good. It's actually the best Chana Masala I've had, personally.

This turned out very well, however I used more tomato paste than the recipe stated.. I think next time I might use tomato sauce instead? just a little. With the one tablespoon it just wasn't as red as everybody else's pictures haha. Very good, I will make this often! I served over jasmine rice. -Jess
