Burger Buns

What you need:

1/4 cup warm water
3 tablespoons yeast
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 cups nondairy milk (I use soy)
2 teaspoons salt
5-6 cups flour, as needed

What you do:

If you have a bread machine... combine everything in the correct order and make the dough. Otherwise,
1. Dissolve yeast in warm water. Let sit 10 minutes. Add sugar, oil, and milk to yeast mixture. Mix well. Add salt and gradually add the flour until the dough is thick enough to knead, but not too stiff.
2. Knead for 8-10 minutes, until dough reaches and elastic consistency. Let rise 15 minutes. Separate dough into 12 balls. (If you want smaller buns, make about 20). Knead/form each ball well, and place on a baking sheet about 1 1/2" apart.
3. Cover with a damp dish cloth and place in a warm spot. (An oven that was heated but has cooled quite a bit works well). Let rise 20-30 minutes, or until the edges of the buns are about 1/4'' apart. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
4. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until brown on the top. Best served warm; store in a plastic bag to keep in the moisture if keeping overnight.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

So so so good!! These went great with my snobby joes.
I used one packet of yeast and a white to ww ratio of 4:1 - got 15 buns. Also added 1/4 cup ground flax seed and 1/4 cup wheat gluten.
A bit short but i should have let them rise alot more. On the second batch i poured earth balance on them - my God!! DELICIOUS!  :)>>>
I will never buy store-brand again, thank you so much for this recipe!

So Im not sure what I did wrong. I halved the recipe, and used 1 packed of yeast. I mixed whole wheat and white flour with a handful of oats. When I finally mixed everything together I didnt even use all my flour mixture, it would have been way too dry. Then after I let the dough rise the first time there was really only enough dough for 1 bun, maybe two, but I like good sized buns. What did I do wrong?? I ended up making 4 tiny buns almost the size of Krystal or White Castle Buns, and im letting them rise now. Im sure they will taste great, I just had anticipated more buns! :-\

These were beautiful and delicious!  I did alter the recipe a little, mixing one envelope of yeast (2-1/4 tsp.) with the warm water plus 1/4 cu flour and 1 tbsp of sugar to allow it to grow before adding the remaining ingredients.  I also subbed water for 1/2 cu soymilk, and increased the amount of time I let it rise.  I'll definitely make them again.

I always freeze these and they are perfect.

Does anyone know if these freeze well?

These buns are really great!  I usually brush a little maple syrup on them right before they go in the oven.  I also use a 50/50 mix of all-purpose and whole wheat flour.  My husband likes these way better than anything I can buy at the store - and they're so quick and easy!

I make these all the time to put sloppy joes on.  I find that 1.5 T of yeast is plenty.
Also, the recipe makes a lot, but it's definitely not hard to eat them all!  Mmmm.

My yeast mixture was lumpy-- Did I just not mix it well enough, or use too much or too little water?  Went ahead and made them anyway with whole wheat flour and reg. flour.  They were fine, but  I burnt them a little bit on the bottom.  Perfect for veggie  burgers.

These were fantastic!  I used half whole wheat and half white flour.  My husband and I both loved these.  I'll never buy bread again.

This is a great recipe. I'm usually not patient when it comes to making bread but I had some time so I decided to give this a try. I cut the recipe in half and used water instead of soy milk. I made 5 big buns and they turned out fantastic!  :)>>>
