Buffalo Tempeh Wings

What you need: 

1 block tempeh
1 cup (roughly) vegetable oil
1 cup Buffalo-style sauce
fixings (celery, salad dressing, etc.)

What you do: 

This recipe was inspired by The Top in Gainesville.
Heat oil over medium-high heat in a skillet or frying pan - use enough to be at least a half inch deep.
Meanwhile, cut the tempeh into half-inch thick slices. Set up a plate with some paper towels on it next to the stove.
Drop the tempeh into the oil and fry for about 10 minutes, turning it so all the sides get a nice, dark golden color.
When all the "wings" are dark and crispy, use a slotted spoon or spider to pull them out of the oil, and drain them on the paper towels.
Pour your Buffalo sauce into a bowl, then add a few of the tempeh pieces. Mix them around so they're coated, or cover the bowl and shake it. Repeat with the rest of the "wings" until they're all done.
Serve 'em up with celery and carrot sticks, and your favorite salad dressing for dipping.
I had this dish at The Top in Gainesville, FL awhile ago, and I had to try it at home. I was really pleased at how easy it was and how well they turned out. I heartily recommend them with a side of sweet potato fries, just like at The Top.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This has to be the most tasteful, satisfying, kick your ass unhealthy thing I have had in a long time. I LOVED  every second of IT! This place in Asheville makes these and I keep going on the wrong nights so I was excited to see this recipe. After I fried the hell out of the tempeh I beer battered it, fried it again, added the sauce (with melted earth balance in it), and then broiled them for a few to brown (told you, unhealthy). HOLY F*ck were they good. This is the first time my husband would eat tempeh, as it was barely recognizable with all the frying and what-not!  I find it hard to believe that I used to be a wing girl....now I can be again, minus the feathers.  :) d**n I forgot to take a picture. I will take one of the leftovers tomorrow.

I forgot to mention......I served this with Flashback mac and cheese from this site, and some sauteed collard greens. It was the perfect meal!!!

When ever my girlfriend was in Gainsville I would have her bring me home these wings!  but she told me everything was Vegan...I guess not. 
I cooked them for lunch today and they were really good.  I definatly didnt fry them for 10 minutes though.

Just want to throw in a quick comment!  I haven't tried the recipe yet but I have been to the Top in Gainsville and they are the best buffalo tempeh wings ever!  Especially over the sweet potatoe fries.  However, the last time I went I came to find that they were not vegan because they cook them in butter first.  I was devistated.  So, I'm definitely going to try to make them at home so I can enjoy them again.  This is just a warning to anyone who might eat there.  However, if you are just a vegetarian, go crazy.  Their menu is great!

these were delicious I made them with  a side of potatoes, mmmmm and homemade dressing it was so good.

really good! I haven't been veg long enough to forget what wings taste like and these taste shockingly like wings. Next time I will try cooking them longer, the one I thought was overcooked was the best....thanks for the recipe, cant wait to have these with vegan ranch dressing a pizza and a cold beer!
