Brandy Baked Beans

What you need: 

1 medium onion, peeled and finely chopped
2 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
2 teaspoon mustard powder
1/2 teaspoon paprika
salt and pepper to taste
1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon brandy
1/4 cup molasses
8 oz. tomato sauce
32 oz. cooked navy beans

What you do: 

In a large pot, saute the onions and spices in the olive oil over medium heat, until the onions are translucent. Whisk in the cocoa powder and brandy, add the tomato sauce and molasses, stir well, then add the cooked navy beans. Mix until beans are completely covered with sauce, then turn heat to low and simmer uncovered for 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

I made these a while ago and they were very tasty, even better on the second day.  Visiting the recipe again because I am going to make them for a gathering tomorrow.  I am still confused though.  Are the navy beans 2 lbs before cooking or after cooking?

I made these a while back and they are really good.  I didn't add the cocoa powder as I was scared to.  These taste like the sweet baked beans my mom used to make.  Really good stuff.

Don't be scared to add the cocoa. Honestly, next time please do give it a try-it adds such a great depth of flavour and really complements the brandy so well.
I can't even imagine making this recipe without the cocoa...it's like the secret ingredient that makes it extra delicious.
Unsweetened cocoa powder is often used in Mexican cooking (think mole sauce) and such a small amount really just brings out the other flavours and complements them, it doesn't make it taste like chocolate at all, if that's what you were worried about.
