Black Bean Burgers

What you need:

1 (20 ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1/4 cup yellow onion, diced
1/4 cup red bell pepper, diced
1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper
1 egg replacer (http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=7678.0)
1 cup seasoned bread crumbs
2 tablespoons fresh chopped cilantro
2 tablespoons olive oil
salsa, to garnish
alfalfa sprouts, to garnish
guacamole, to garnish

What you do:

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease baking pan. In a large bowl, mash black beans then add onion, bell pepper, cayenne pepper, egg replacer, vegan bread crumbs and cilantro.
2. Blend until all ingredients are mixed well. Form bean mixture into patties and place on prepared pan.
3. Bake for 10 minutes. Alternatively, fry them in olive oil. I recommend baking them. Serve with garnishes, if desired.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

These were great. I used flour in place of egg substitute. I also used hot sauce & did not add any salt. I like spicy food. They held together beautifully. I don't think I'll ever buy a packaged burger again.

Hmm, I think I should give these a try. Any good ideas for substituting the beans? Yeah I know, kinda defeats the purpose of a Black Bean Burger, huh?  :-D

This is the picture I see when I get on the site today and it made my mouth water. I love making black bean burgers. My Dad and Stepmom ate some and now they get hankering for it. Blackbeans are love. Man, the sandwich in the picture looks huge! GREAT RECIPE and Pic!

Yeah man, they were a hit.  I want to make them, like everyday.

Mmmmmm!

I made these tonight, and I don't know how anyone had problems making these because they were SOOO easy.  That's really the best part about them.  I made a wee bit more than suggested... I used two 15 oz. cans of black beans and added about an additional 1/2 cup bread crumbs, approximately an additional 1/8 cup (give or take, I stopped measuring, haha) onions and red pepper, and about half an "egg" more than the initial egg replacement.

Just a note to anyone who had issues with them... I don't know how much any of you played around with the mixture, but there's more to it than just "blending".  I squished it around like play-doh for a few minutes and got it really nice and doughy and it made it really easy to form into patties without them falling apart.

I sprayed the cookie sheet with a bit of canola oil spray, and I cooked them all for 20 minutes, flipping them at 10, like someone else suggested.

I loved them.  Mine were soft, but they weren't too mushy, and didn't fall apart on me.  While I could taste the spice of the cayenne, I do agree they were a little bland.  I'll think of something different to try next time, I think.

I ate mine on a bun topped with guacamole, vegan sour cream, alfalfa sprouts, and a tomato.  DELICIOUS!

can't wait to upload my peeectures of them :)

These were good! Mushy, but good.

These were great. I added a lot of diced jalapeños and added quite a bit more onion that the recipe called for.
I used this on a George Foreman grill and they held up very well. No crumbling or anything, plus they got barely tough on both sides.
My boyfriend said that it was better than any hamburger he’s ever had.
Will definitely make again.

I made these last night, modifying the seasonings to what i had in the house.
I also purred the beans in the food processor, to give a smooth texture.  I used hot sauce instead of cayenne, no cilantro, i didn't have egg substitute.
I added a clove of garlic, 1 tbsp. Mrs. Dash and a Tbsp of tomato paste.  I also let the finished product sit in the fridge for a couple of hours before i baked them. Baked in a 375 oven, each side brushed with olive oil so each side would get a crispy crust.  I think it really needs two different textures, so it doesn't just seem like a mushy bean patty.  It was a very good recipe, BF liked it, and I'm sure we will be making it quite often.

I made these last night and they were fantastic!  I used a little less bread crumbs and added jalapenos, hot sauce and mexican spices.  That really added and kick and made them fantastic!  I ve been wanting to try making my own bean burgers forever and I finally did, and they were excellent.  They will be a staple for me forever!

SO DELICIOUS! The lovely ladies at UW-Madison made these as part of our Karaoke Kitchen with limited space and resources in our dormitory kitchen. They were such a hit!!! They are soft, as other posts said, but we kept ours in the oven a tiny bit longer than recommended, then gave them a quick sear on the stove with some olive oil.  I was the only vegetarian in the group, but everybody loved them! Great flavor! We added a little extra of all the veggies in order amp up our veggie intake, and they were soooo delicious! We ate these with the Spicy Fries (also found on this site) and it was just the perfect meal!
