BeNo--You Know You Need It!!

What you need:

1 cup water
1/8 teaspoon crushed mint
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice

What you do:

Mix the above ingredients together. Gulp it down just before your meal--or during.
As vegans, I'm sure we're all aware of the wonderful effects our diet has on our body. Unfortunately...one side effect for vegans is EXCESSIVE flatulence. Blech! If anyone's ever told you the fib that "eventually your body will get used to your diet, and it will go away"--you've been duped!!
Maybe my body is just prone to foulness, but either way, this above remedy works wonders. Try it and see!
You can substitute crushed mint with sage or thyme.

SO HOW'D IT GO?

U could also try putting a piece of kombu in the pot when u boil the beans and that will help digestion.
if its bean farts were talking about

I'm so glad I found this post. Now I can't wait to get home to try it out.  I'm getting tired of apologizing to my little girl for being so stinky! I'm certain this doesn't taste all that great, but if it works....I'll try anything at this point!

This really works! I like the taste too...

I make this with no mint, just a little more lemon juice and baking soda than called for- and it works, uh, really well.  ;)

if it's suppression I wonder if it's healthy to use it daily. Any ideas?

There really is no such thing as "suppression" of flatulence. Gas is produced by bacteria in your gut. They love a certain type of carbohydrate in beans for example that our body can't break down, so it passes to the lower part of the intestine without being broken down and the bacteria have a feast (and make gas while at it). If they make gas, there's gas, if they don't, they don't, you're not really suppressing anything except probably the food for the bacteria feast, and I doubt that's harmful. I'd be very interested to know the chemistry behind this flatulence-curing recipe,... why baking soda, why mint? Do these things break down or alter carbohydrates that the bacteria eat?

I will try this one day. Also, if the function of the mint in this recipe is to generally aid digestion, you could sub it with ginger if you either don't like mint or don't have any at hand. Ginger does pretty much the same thing in that case.

I had the same fart-inducing dinner two nights in a row -- veggie chili with kidney beans and tvp -- to try a scientific comparison  :).  Without it, I farted about 10 times in the four hours after the meal, compared to three times when I drank this concoction prior.

I love that you thought to conduct scientific research on this!  I am laughing my butt off (awful pun intended!)

It reduces it substantially, in other words. The only thing I wonder is if it eliminates the gas entirely or just suppresses is -- if it's suppression I wonder if it's healthy to use it daily. Any ideas?

Mint (especially peppermint) is known for aiding in digestion so that probably has something to do with how it helps out.

Guess I'll throw in my two cents--when I remember to make it (lol), it works pretty well! I agree with the poster above who said it makes about a 90% difference. As for taste, it's not as bad as it sounds, IMO. I think it tastes like really watered-down mint tea (ie, bland mint tea, lol). Thanks again for sharing with us!  :)

no, the mint acutally does stuff.  I'm not sure what.....but after plenty of experimenting on my self (TMI!!!) the mint does something.  You can sub it with sage or thyme.  All three work equally well. lol, personally I think it tastes GROSS.  But the benefits are amazing...... ;)
