Bekka's Vegan Sloppy Joe's

What you need:

2 cups vegan "beef" crumbles (I use Boca crumbles)
1/2 cup yellow onion, chopped
1/4 cup green bell pepper, chopped
oil or water, as needed
1 tablespoon white vinegar
1 tablespoon sugar or sweetener of choice
1/4 cup ketchup
12 ounces tomato sauce
1 tablespoon vegan Worcestershire sauce (I use Annie's Naturals)
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon black pepper, or to taste
8 vegan hamburger buns

What you do:

1. Cook the onion, green pepper, and "beef" crumbles in a large skillet until the veggies are tender and the crumbles are thoroughly cooked through. I cooked mine in a bit of oil, but you could probably cook it in a bit of water instead.
2. Add all the rest of the ingredients to the skillet. Mix together very well. Cover and let simmer for 10 to 20 minutes.
3. Serve on hamburger buns and enjoy!
These are sooo simple and cost affective to make!

SO HOW'D IT GO?

This was so good! I added zucchini and squash and my children gobbled it up. I did not add sugar - it was already sweet enough. Thanks for the recipe.

This was amazing!  I altered some ingredients- cider vinegar in place of white, yellow pepper in place of green, blended a can of diced tomatoes and tomato paste- and used soy protein crumbles (12 oz).  I have been craving sloppy joes since I stopped eating meat and it was yummy and filling without that "I'm sick" feeling.  The kids love it too as an added bonus so I would recommend this dish to your menu of veges and meat eaters! Thanks for the recipe!

hooray! i'm glad you enjoyed it!! :)

These were so yummy! I added leeks, garlic, and mushroom to the mix. Plus I used mildly spicy peppers instead of bell peppers. I also used crumbled extra firm tofu instead of burger crumbles.

These were so good on freshly made burger buns from this site. YUM! Thanks for the recipe.

Yeah I actually usually do add a clove or two of garlic and one or two jalapenos as well :)  I would have probably added the garlic right into the recipe but I kind of forgot.
Happy to hear you enjoyed it!

I'm not sure I've ever had sloppy joe's that didn't come out of a can before; I have always liked it okay, but this stuff is just great!  I was out of tomato sauce so I used tomato and basil spaghetti sauce in its place.  I am sooo delighted to find an easy recipe my whole family likes!  (I served it with the roasted brussel sprouts--a great pairing!) :)>>>

so glad you enjoyed these!!  this was the recipe my mom used (un-vegan) when I was a kid and I always loved them so I haaaad to veganize it.

Just whipped up some of these bad boys last night for my boyfriend's lunch for the week.  He's been begging me to make them for weeks!
