BBQ Tofu Cubes

What you need:

1 tablespoon oil
1 pound firm tofu, drained and diced
2/3 cup vegan BBQ sauce
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons soy sauce (I use low sodium)
Louisiana hot sauce, to taste
1 tablespoon sugar

What you do:

1. Heat oil in frying pan and add tofu. Saute on medium until the tofu starts to turn a light golden color.
2. Meanwhile, combine the rest of the ingredients, and heat them in the microwave for 1 minute. Stir this sauce and add it to the tofu.
3. Continue to cook on medium until the sauce has gotten very thick.
Very popular with toddlers!

I ate these using Bull's Eye Texas bbq sauce and we toasted the bread, put ranch dressing on top and made sandwiches. Amazing! I am liking tofu more and more nowadays.

Thanks Kat for submitting this recipe!

Made this last night and was pleasantly surprised. I still remember real BBQ pretty well, so it was going to take a lot to win me over. I did not make the sauce as sweet, though I started with a bottled sweet sauce for thickness. I prefer a vinegar based sauce, more sweet/sour, so I added vinegar and spices to cut back the sweet somewhat. I did strips, not cubes.

Some things I would do differently are that I would cut the strips thinner. The strips of tofu I cut were 1 inch wide, but 3 inches long by 1/2 in deep. The ones that I "accidentally" cut a bit more shallow - 1/4 inch deep - cooked much more like rib/pork meat. I would also probably brown the tofu before adding the oil. This is how I have been doing my tofu and it seems to set up better, more like a restaurant this way. I tried it straight into the oil, as instructed, and it took a while to get the water out. Still they were yummy, woofed down a whole (pre cooked) pound of them myself. Greens, corn, cukes/tomato salad for sides. Lime-aid with honey. Mmmmm. Will definitely do these again.

I think this may be my favorite recipe... I have used it for years now and it is always a hit in our house! :)

Simple and delicious! I served this with "cheesy" potatoes and broccoli and the whole family dug in. I did leave out the sugar for the sake of the diabetics, and the hot sauce for those with sensitive digestive systems, but the sauce was still really tasty. Thanks for this recipe!

Quick and easy, I made it with ingredients I had on hand. It was simple and good. Next time I'll try with steamed broccoli

I froze and pressed my tofu before the recipe, I also left out the sugar because BBQ sauce already has sugar in it. Other than that, it was pretty awesome.

Oh and I forgot to mention.... instead of 1/2 cup water, I did 1/4 cup orange juice, 1/4 cup water. LOVED IT!

This was x-tra tasty! I added some sliced mushrooms and broccoli to the sauce/tofu mix. I served it over some brown rice and a corn on the cob on the side! Thanks for sharing!
