Addictive Flour Tortillas

What you need:

2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 cup vegan butter or vegetable shortening (I use Earth Balance)
3/4 cup warm nondairy milk (I use original hemp milk)

What you do:

1. Mix dry ingredients in bowl. Add Vegan margarine until it is well combined and mixture looks grainy.
2. Add the warm milk and mix until a smooth ball of dough forms. Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll pieces into balls.
3. Cover and let rest for 30 minutes. Once rested, roll the balls of dough into 6″ to 7″ tortillas.
4. Cook on a griddle, or in a heavy pan, over medium heat until golden brown and puffy. Transfer to a plate and cover with a towel while the rest cook.

The dough was really sticky, and it tasted pretty floury. Perhaps I cooked it on too high heat. I probably won't make them again.

I used to make my tortillas with veg oil salt and water as well, but I found that the hemp/soy milk really makes the tortillas. It gives it that addictive taste :) The hemp milk I use is not refridgerated it is in with the boxed milks like the almond/ rice milks. Here are the two brands I have used...

Hemp milk is amazing :) Hope you find it!

interesting recipe, i've gotta try it. i make mine with veg oil, canola oil, corn oil-whatever i have on hand (my sister makes hers with olive oil), flour, salt, and boiling hot water, all in the kitchenaid stand mixer. i'm adding your recipe to my list, thanks. btw, i've never seen hemp milk sold at my grocer. is it refridgerated or boxed like almond milk?

i made these and they were pretty awesome. i think the only weirdness was my cooking equipment and technique. i made a couple thicker and cooked them for slightly less time and they were VERY nice. i had dustin make the rest of them and he wanted them thinner and kept forgetting about them so they got a bit crispy in the middle (no tortilla press and cooking them on a cast iron skillet)

I made these for my dad because he missed home made tortillas and they turned out amazing. They where so fluffy and yummy and i approve. I made them with spanish rice and then i made them extra big and turned them into quesadilas and it was delicious! Gracias for the recipe:)
