Baked Sweet Potato Chips

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    sweet potato
    vegetable cooking spray
    favorite spice (I use garlic salt or something called crazy salt)

Directions:

Heat oven to 350.  Peel sweet potato (works with yams too) and slice thin, as if for a thick potato chip.  Cover a cookie sheet or baking pan with foil, sprayed lightly with vegetable spray.  Lay sweet potato chips on the foil, rubbing each one slightly in the veggie spray.  Then lightly spray the tops with veggie spray, sprinkly with your favorite spice.  Bake for 20 minutes, turn, sprinkle that side, and bake for another 10 minutes.

Make a lot, because EVERYONE including small children, SOs and teenagers who usually stick up their noses at healthy food, tend to like these.


Instead of vegetable cooking spray (which I think should be outlawed because of its excess packaging, even if they do now claim to be free of CFCs), try this: put the chips into a plastic bag with about a teaspoon of oil (or more or less), blow in some air, and shake to coat. Works great, and you can re-use the bag, too.

I also make a this on the grill when we are camping.  Doesnt turn quite as crispy, but sure is better than eating chips.  I also think they should outlaw the sprays.  Enjoy

This is really yummy. With regards to vegetable sprays... High end cooking stores carry these contraptions that you put your oil in, pump the top, then spray. I think they cost about $10. There are no chemicals, the only thing they contain is OIL and AIR. =)

I make a similar version of this recipe with Yams.  Instead of the oil coating the yams, I toss the yam slices in a bowl of warmed up honey (vegans could use a vegan sugar water mixture or maple syrup, which would be great, I bet).  The sugar gives it a slightly sweet taste and makes them crispy.  Also, I use one of those oil pump spray contraptions which I LOVE and I use it to spray the cooking sheet.  But because of the sugar, they still tend to stick.  Oh - and my spice of choice:  CAJUN!  Yummy!

I make these with a combo of ideas you guys have had.  1 tbsp. oil in a bag, toss in the potato slices and cinnamon as my spice of choice.  To help with the stickiness that vegan sugar can cause when you're baking them, I toss them in a baggie right after I pull them from the oven that has sugar and cinnamon in it to give it a final light coat.  I make sure they aren't covered in the cinnamon sugar, but it gives them a little extra sweetness. Theyre great for after a meal.

i am sorry... everyone not telling the truth about this receipes.. it does not comes out as everyone of you have said.. it s so bad and poor..  i tried everything of everyone suggested... and not even close to come out the way everyone has said.  i am sorry this receipes sucks and its very bad... something is missing...and no one seems to know what the main ingredients of this receipes needs...  bad and poor rating.

how dare you accuse us of lying, dear.  without a description of what you think of your results, we cannot help, and perhaps this recipe just is not for every person, but i have tried this with several of the previously mentioned variations, along with the original recipe, and i am quite fond of these~tasty, WAY healthier than chips, light, guilt-free, and just a HAPPY HAPPY option for myself or to offer all of my non-veggie friends ~bon appetit~  and yuet, I hope your next cooking endeavors, whatever they may be, are happier for you Wink

i am not lying about this receipe.. even my friend and sister has tried exactly the same receipe as directed by you.. but the chips turn out to be all black and sogy.. i am sorry.. if you think i am lying.. but i am telling the truth.. NOT EXUCSING you of lying....  so please don't you excuse me of lying.. about this... I am telling the truth.... if the truth hurts.. than I am sorry.. its the truth about this sweet potato recieps.. i don't understand why you are so defensive.. i am be telling the truth about this receipe.. if not you won't be so defensive....  so don't excuse me of lying.. i tried the receipe.. its bad... waste of sweet potato done this way.. if anyone has a great idea of baking sweet potato.. please share..because i bought 3 sweet potato from health food.. costs me $5.58 and I don't think i am telling the truth here... proving that I am lying...

i tossed the slices in a bag of olive oil and ground clove and cinnamon... turned out very well.   Made a great side for portabello burgers.

i have made a variation of this recipe for many years, its delicious and healthy. And to those who had an unfortunate experience with this recipe, realize that the instructions are subjective, they are not strict guidelines by any means (ie. no measurements etc.) so they should be adjusted to your personal needs. I would assume that you are an younger, possibly inexperienced, cook due to the unneccessary and inappropriate comments on something as insignifican't as a failed attempt at a recipe, keep in mind that all ovens bake differently, especially older ovens, they tend to cook unevenly, so the recipe should be adjusted with that in mind, as well, you are cooking with a starchy substance, therefore LOTS of oil should be used because you are essentially dehydrating the substance which concentrates the starch and sugars making it stickier. I have run into problems with recipes of this kind and have managed to properly trouble shoot, i hope this helps you achieve a good result with this recipe next time.

I thought the recipe was a great idea, but I had some trouble. How do you slice the sweet potato to keep it thin and consistant? I used a cuisinart to slice the potato, but the slices were still to thick and a little uneven. My chips turned out chewy in the middle and crispy around the edges. I wasn't able to leave them in longer because they would have burned.

I tried these chips this morning, after having gastric bypass surgery a month ago, I am getting into a great new lifestyle of healthy eating and tons of exercise.  I varied a little on the chips, i used parchment paper rather than tin foil, so for those of you who like the sweet variation, it would work better than tin foil, it also soaks up some of the oil and doesn't create a frying effect.  I sprayed the paper with non stick spray but just a little, and tossed the sweet potato in some olive oil, a teaspoon was plenty. I then shook on some garlic plus seasoning which has fine particles of other dried veggies and some salt.  I baked them for 15 minutes at 350F and then turned them, seasoned again and turned down the oven to 200F for another half hour or sodepending on your oven and how thick you slice them.  They stopped browning and they dehydrated more than cooked.  Also, for the slicing, I used my mandalin slicer which made them paper thin and consistent.  The thinner the slices the less time cooking.  I loved this recipe!  It gave me a chance to add my own variation and still get the crunch and salt I miss from chips and I cat eat them as a veggie.  I am going to try a curry version next.  Thanks!

A good way to slice the potato thin enough is to use a Mandolin slicer--also called a V-slicer.  Can be purchased at kitchen stores.  I have one of those pump spray bottles that someone suggested--works great.  Mine is called Misto.  You can put any type of oil in it, so I would try some flavored oils sometime.

The parchment paper is a good idea.  I would also consider trying one of those silicone cookie sheet liners.  They should work well since you can bake cookies on them without any oil.  These also are available in cooking stores and can be obtained at discount prices--reusable forever.

Pampered Chef makes a great kitchen spritzer so that cooking spray is out of the picture.  Jennifer is right on the button with the pricing...about $10.  Its well worth it.  GREAT RECIPE!!!  I added it to my menu for my annual party and the sweet potatoes were a hit.  My seasoning of choice...Mortons Nature Seasoning.

I just made this recipe with some organic taro I got.  It turned out really well.  Sliced the taro using a mandoline and used cajun spice on one batch, then cayenne on the other and mixed them together.  Yum, the chips turned out great.

I just tried this recipe.  Used the plastic bag trick with olive oil and it worked great!  I used seasoned salt and freshly ground black pepper.  I cooked these for 20 minutes at 350 degrees on convection.  I cooked these on a cookie sheet using nonstick foil and another batch on a rack.  Both turned out fine.  I did not turn as they were done in the first 20 minutes. Probably because  convection cooks more quickly.  They are black or dark brown, but this does NOT make them taste bad.  If they were soggy, yuet may have used too much oil and/or sliced them too thick.  Mine were not soggy and I oiled them in a plastic bag by shaking.  I thought they are good. I am doing the low carb diet and miss chips.  I wonder how turnips would taste as a chip?

Hi, I've tried this but can't get my chips to get hard and crispy - they sortof stay moist almost and flimsy and I really want to make these because I love them!  Any suggestions?

After posting my comment about the crispiness I see all these other postings.  Sorry about that!  I just got a new oven so I will give it another shot and see what happens.  Anyone ever try it with green beans or any other veggies?  i know the mixes you can buy have those and they are so yummy

What i find works for me in terms of crispiness is to make sure the oven is pre-heated. I also splash a baking tray with some extra oil and put it into the hot oven for about 5 minutes, then (carefully) take it out and add the potatoes to the hot oil on the tray before putting it back in to bake.

Instead of slicing rounds (a pain even with a mandolin slicer), try cutting long thin-ish wedges (1/2 or 1 cm) that look like steak fries.  They are addicting!  This is virtually identical to a Weight Watchers recipe that uses salt, peper and 1 tbsp olive oil.  I think the key to crispiness is preheating the oven to 450, not 350, and baking about 30-35 minutes.  The higher heat should do the trick.

I always make these when i have sweet potatoes in the house.
They are really good with brown sugar, cinnamin, and nutmeg.
