Easy Tofu Fillet Sandwich with Tartar Sauce

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    1/3 cup cornmeal
    1/4 cup flour
    1/4 cup bread crumbs
lemon pepper to taste, Italian or other preferred dry seasoning
    12 oz. extra firm tofu
3 whole wheat sandwich buns OR toasted bread
    1/2 cup vegan mayonnaise substitute
2 teaspoon each of lemon juice, chopped pickle, and onion
    salt and pepper to taste
    fresh lettuce
    tomato slices

Directions:

Begin preparing your tofu by cutting into about 1/2 thick slices. Press and drain these well, then freeze overnight to improve texture.

The next day, prepare your breading by mixing cornmeal, flour, bread crumbs, and your seasoning thoroughly in a bowl. Bread your tofu slices completely, and then deep-fry for about five minutes or until completely cooked--times will vary based on your methods and temperature.

Set your fillets aside to drain on a paper towel as you prepare your tartar sauce.  Mix vegan mayo, pickle, and onion well in a small bowl, then add lemon juice, salt, and pepper to taste.  You might alternately just want to use the vegan mayo; its all up to you.

Spread as much as you like on half of each bun, then layer up with lots of crisp lettuce and juicy tomato slice.  Add a fillet, and voile!

Serves: about 3

Preparation time: roughly 20 minutes

lokks good, can't wait to try.

After eating many, many fish fillet sandwiches during the course of my non-vegetarian life, I have to say these are a very satisfying substitue. I was worried that I would need to coat the tofu patties to make sure the breading would stick, but it turned out to be quite unnessecary. I just mixed up my breading in a sandwich baggie, added my tofu slices, and shook it like a polaroid picture! It was great!

this was exactly what i wanted today and it was pretty yummy.  not exactly like the real deal, but still a tasty sandwhich.  i didn't have breadcrumbs so i crushed up some garlic herb crackers and it worked great.  i didn't freeze my tofu because i can never plan that far ahead, but it didn't seem to matter.  i added a tablesppoon of pickle juice to my tartar sauce and ditched the onion because there's a similar recipe on here that made it that way. i didn't realize i missed tartar sauce until i tried this!  i wish i would have taken a picture because it looked really good too!

Mine turned out nicely Smiley  Next time I'll take your advice and freeze some extra firm tofu.  I just used the firm boxed stuff I had in the cabinet, so it was a little squishy.

I thought this was REALLY good!  I didn't freeze the tofu, but I can see how it would add nice texture.

This was great!! I changed it slightly to make sure the crumb mixture stuck to the tofu. To do this I coated it once in the crumb mixture, then dipped it in a combination of soy milk and egg replacer and then coated it in crumbs again. Wonderful!!

for whatever reason I wanted fish today.  So even tho I've never been able to eat tofu (just don't like it) I decided to make this anyway.  I froze the tofu and followed the directions until i discovered that the burners were not working!  "No problem,  the oven is still working I'll just bake them" was my thought.  They didn't come out as brown, but still crispy on the outside.  And here is the amazing part!  I actually ate them!  The sauce makes them soooo good.    However, next time i make this I'll probably skip freezing the tofu.  It seemed to have a more chicken texture than fish to me.   And the above posters say it would be better to freeze,  guess you gotta be a little "different"  lol

Made this for dinner, I didn't fry them, baked them instead. I also added Kelp powder. They taste pretty good by themselves. I also added the lemon pepper on the slices individually and let me sit for about an hour so the flavor would soak in. I used tofu that had been frozen.....good recipe, thanks.

I'm not a huge fan of tofu, but I tried this recipe and was surprised with the results. I only wish my sandwich could have turned out like the picture, but i'm not so great at frying so mine didnt look so nice, but it tasted good and I guess thats what really matters!

Yum! I didn't even have half of the ingredients..but mine was still great. I mixed up a couple of tbs of cornmeal with a couple tbs of flour..and crushed a few tortilla chips into the breading. I added salt, pepper, oregano, and onion powder. I didn't have any bread crumbs..or any lemon..I made my tartar sauce with veganaise, mustard, chopped pickle, chopped onion, salt and pepper. I made three tofu slices, breaded them, and fried them in a little canola oil. They came out perfectly...but I only needed two slices for my sandwich. I didn't have any lettuce..or tomato (just used them yesterday), so I just had the fillets and sauce on toasted bread. This was my husband's worst nightmare, but I loved it! ; )

I really love this! I just had it again..still didn't have any lemon..but it's great without. I love the tartar sauce with veganaise, mustard, chopped pickle and onion, s and p. I keep my tofu frozen (it's firm not silken)..thaw it in the microwave and just squish moisture out..bread it..and it comes out great! Thanks for this idea.

We really liked this.  I let the tofu sit and marinate in some lemon juice and fish & chip vinegar before breading and frying.  Goes really well with the tartar sauce, lettuce and tomato.  Thanks!
