Chana Masala

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

    2 tablespoon vegetable oil
    1 medium onion, chopped
1 large clove of garlic, minced
    1 tablespoon curry
1 tablespoon tomato paste (I used ketchup, how embarassing Smiley
15 oz can of chick peas drained, reserving 3 tablespoon liquid
    1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    fresh black pepper
crushed red pepper, optional to taste
    1 tablespoon margarine

Directions:

I don't know how authentic this is, but I whipped it up last night.  It tasted great to me.

Heat oil on medium high heat.  Fry onions until slightly browned.  Reduce heat to medium.  Add garlic, curry, and paste.  Stir and simmer about 2 minutes.  Add chick peas, liquid, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper.  Simmer 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Add red pepper to taste.  Add margarine, stirring through to melt it.  Stir and simmer for 5 minutes more or until peas are softened and dish is hot.  Serve over rice.

This recipe was wonderful.  I added some turmeric.

Most excellent! This recipe is delicious, quick and easy to make. I made it all from stuff I have in the house and it turned out great.

This is a terrific recipe. I like to serve it with Greek style Pitas (the brand is King of Pita) and soy yogurt. I make it often.

I forgot to say that I always add coconut milk to this recipe-it makes it taste creamier.

what type of curry?

I make it different. don't know if this is correct though, 1. fry onions till browned, add spices, corriender powder, turmeric etc.. to taste 2. add chopped tomatoes.. and top 2 cups of water, slowly adding.  3. simmer till water breaks.. i add a little honey for sweetness 4. add the chana with more water and salt... and cook till condensed.  5. serve with chopped corriender and some yoghurt

Chana Masala is my absolute favorite Indian dish, and this was an awesome version.  I will be making this again and again and again.  Thanks!

This is an awesome recipe.  I substituted the lite coconut milk for the margarine and 1T. garam masala for the spices and it turned out so delicious my carnivorous husband said I should double it next time...I don't think there's a better compliment I could give.  YUM!

This was so good. I added diced tomatoes and Garam Masala. I served it on Quinoa because I was out of Basmati and it was very good. Thanks for the recipe.

Is there another bean that I can substitute for the chick peas? I'd love to make this for my boyfriend, but he doesn't like chick peas.  Thanks.

yes rivers, your photographs really enhance the recipes' appeal.  i noticed them yesterday.  the food looks particularly appealing and edible.  i feel sure they will attract attention to the recipes they represent.  well done for your apparently considered efforts.  keep up the good work.

This recipe was amazing! As I was cooking it, I was worried a little about whether or not I would like it, but it came together wonderfully in the end! This is probably one of my favorite recipes I have gotten off of this web-site! I am cooking it again tomorrow for a potluck.

I served it over couscous.

Yum!! I made this for my family when they came up to visit, and even my carnivorous, anti-chickpea stepfather loved it. My mother insisted on getting a copy of the recipe. Smiley
